BEIJING — In a striking fusion of automotive design and audio culture, MINI has partnered with renowned Austrian design studio Vagabund to unveil two uniquely customized show cars based on the MINI Countryman S ALL4. The vehicles will make their global debut at the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, which opens to the public on April 24.

The partnership leverages the inherent versatility of the MINI Countryman as a platform, upon which Vagabund has imprinted its distinctive creative vision — one deeply inspired by music and outdoor lifestyle culture. The result is two unique vehicles that function as much as mobile sound systems as they do bold statements of personal expression.

Visually, the two show cars present a study in contrasts. One is finished in a flowing silver base coat, accentuated with sand and white accents, giving it a light and dynamic energy. Its counterpart is cloaked in a deep, monolithic midnight black, exuding a cool and technological aura. This deliberate dual-colour strategy creates strong visual tension and highlights the experimental and creative nature of the collaboration between MINI and Vagabund.

The modifications on the two show cars are both extensive and highly purposeful. They feature a bespoke wide-body wheel arch kit and increased ground clearance, immediately signalling a more capable off-road posture while reinforcing the Countryman's adventurous DNA. The side skirts are prominently embossed with the "VAGABUND" logo, clearly marking their unique identity. A set of custom 20-inch wheels with closed, 3D-printed covers adds a muscular stance, while subtly echoing design elements commonly found in high-end audio equipment.

The roof is fitted with a custom luggage rack crafted from laser-cut aluminum and stainless-steel mesh, a design that cleverly references the grille of a speaker. However, the most audacious transformation is acoustic. Vagabund's designers removed the rear side windows and integrated a professional-grade, custom-built outdoor audio system directly into the vehicle's bodywork.
At the heart of this system is a specially crafted speaker cabinet made from "cast polymer granite" — a material prized in top-tier audiophile equipment for its superior acoustic properties. Multiple tweeters and mid-range speakers are seamlessly integrated into the body panels, while the bass and subwoofer units are mounted at the rear. When the tailgate is opened, they deliver a powerfully resonant low-frequency experience. A single MINI × Vagabund show car functions as a comprehensive wide-soundfield audio system. When the two units are paired together, they can instantly create an immersive, open-air party atmosphere.

Adding a layer of nostalgic contrast to the high-tech audio setup, the designers have embedded a retro-style cassette Walkman into the opposite side of the body. This thoughtful juxtaposition — pairing powerful, open soundscapes with a private, analog listening experience — encapsulates the project's spirit of exploration and blending different eras.
"This collaboration with Vagabund is about harnessing vibrant community energy and turning a music-inspired creative vision into a tangible reality", said a representative from BMW Malaysia. "It showcases the MINI Countryman not just as a vehicle, but as a canvas for personalization and adventurous living."

The silver-accented MINI×Vagabund show car is currently on display at the MINI stand in Hall W4 of the China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi) for the duration of the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. While these are bespoke show pieces, they demonstrate the extreme potential for customization and the strong cultural connections that brands like MINI are building with global design talents.
