When the air-fuel mixture ignites in the cylinder, the resulting high-temperature, high-pressure gas rapidly expands, forcing the piston to move downward in a linear motion. The piston then converts this linear motion into rotational motion of the crankshaft via the connecting rod, and the force output by the crankshaft's rotation constitutes torque. Factors influencing torque magnitude include the number of cylinders, their arrangement, cylinder displacement, intake and exhaust system efficiency, compression ratio, as well as fuel quality and injection technology: a higher number of cylinders means more fuel combusts simultaneously, yielding greater torque output; larger cylinder displacement accommodates more air-fuel mixture, releasing more energy during combustion for higher torque; an efficient intake and exhaust system ensures sufficient fresh air intake and timely exhaust gas expulsion, optimizing combustion cycles to enhance torque; moderately increasing the compression ratio boosts energy release from combustion but excessive ratios may cause knocking; premium fuel and advanced injection technologies enable more complete combustion, further increasing torque. At a given power output, torque is inversely proportional to engine speed—lower speeds produce higher torque. This determines a vehicle's load capacity, acceleration performance, and climbing ability: high-torque vehicles deliver stronger power under heavy loads or when climbing, quicker acceleration from standstill, and require fewer gear shifts.
