Insufficient power steering fluid while driving can lead to noticeable issues in the steering system, primarily manifested as increased steering wheel resistance, difficulty in turning, and potentially abnormal noises from the power steering pump. This occurs because the power steering fluid not only provides hydraulic assistance for steering but also serves to lubricate the power steering pump and transmit steering force. Prolonged operation with low fluid levels will accelerate wear on internal pump components and may even cause part failures, with repair costs potentially ranging from hundreds to thousands of ringgit. It is recommended to check the power steering fluid level every six months and perform a complete fluid replacement after driving 20,000 kilometers or annually, whichever comes first. If the fluid level is below the specified standard, promptly replenish it with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid type, preferably at an authorized service center to ensure fluid quality. Notably, some modern vehicle models utilize electric power steering systems (EPS) that don't require hydraulic fluid, though traditional hydraulic power steering systems still necessitate regular fluid maintenance.
