Whether a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) needs to be charged daily depends on actual usage scenarios and battery management requirements. PHEV models such as BYD DM-i or Li Auto range-extended vehicles are equipped with large-capacity battery packs (typically 15-40kWh), offering an all-electric range of 50-200 kilometers. If the user's daily commute falls within this electric range, daily charging is recommended to maximize electric propulsion, reducing fuel costs to just a few cents per kilometer. Charging options include home slow charging (4-6 hours) or public fast charging (reaching 80% in 30 minutes). When daily charging isn't feasible, the system can still replenish power through surplus engine output or regenerative braking, albeit with slightly reduced fuel efficiency. By comparison, non-plug-in hybrids (HEVs) like Toyota's Hybrid system operate solely on internal combustion engines and regenerative braking, featuring smaller 1-2kWh batteries that don't require external charging. For optimal PHEV battery health, maintaining a charge level between 20%-80% is advised, as prolonged operation at low charge states may degrade battery longevity. Therefore, charging should be prioritized whenever possible.
