Currently, there are no Level 5 (L5) fully autonomous vehicles officially deployed in commercial operation or public testing in Malaysia. However, autonomous driving technology is developing rapidly, with pilot applications of Level 4 (L4) logistics vehicles already implemented. In September 2025, the L4 autonomous logistics vehicle jointly developed by ALS and Zelos debuted at the Kuala Lumpur Smart City Expo. This marked the first autonomous vehicle with enterprise-grade application capabilities, capable of highly automated operations in specific scenarios while still requiring human oversight for emergency intervention. In early 2026, 9Sight Intelligence partnered with Pos Malaysia and ALS to initiate an autonomous driving test project, further advancing the deployment of L4 technology in the logistics sector. From a policy standpoint, the government supports autonomous driving development through documents like the National Automotive Policy, with expectations that L4 and higher-level technologies will gradually extend to public transportation after 2025. L5 autonomous driving must operate without human intervention in any environment and remains in the global R&D phase. While Malaysia's regulatory framework, infrastructure, and technological maturity currently fall short of commercialization requirements, the progress in L4 technology has established a foundation for future advancements.
