Although AMT transmissions excel in fuel economy and cost control, their core drawbacks lie in driving experience and mechanical reliability. The primary deficiency is inadequate shift smoothness, particularly during low-speed driving or in congested conditions with frequent starts and stops, where power interruption during clutch engagement causes noticeable jerking that compromises ride comfort. The electronic control unit's shift timing judgment may lag behind actual demand, resulting in a downshift response delay of approximately 0.5-1 second during rapid acceleration, which necessitates preemptive manual intervention by the driver to optimize power delivery. Mechanically, while AMT systems based on modified manual transmissions reduce manufacturing costs, components like clutch plates experience accelerated wear due to frequent automated operation, potentially increasing maintenance frequency over prolonged use, with typical service intervals around 50,000 kilometres. Some commercial vehicles like the Jiefang J6P have mitigated this issue through optimized shift logic, but AMT solutions remain uncommon in passenger vehicle applications.
