Common problems with car windshield wipers include banded streaks, water streaking, wiper lift, rubber blade hardening, corrosion and wear, hazy streaks, noise, cracking, upper structure damage, and fouling. Water streaking is often due to residual car wax or oil stains. Rubber blade hardening and cracking result from prolonged exposure to sunlight or extreme temperatures, while corrosion and wear are often caused by harsh weather or inferior cleaning agents. Hazy streaks and noise problems stem from glass contamination and aging or deformed rubber blades, respectively. Additionally, mechanical issues such as motor failure, sluggish operation, and failure to reset may occur. Solutions include replacing aged rubber blades, cleaning contaminants from the glass and rubber blades, using high-quality windshield washer fluid, or adjusting the wiper arm pressure. Regular maintenance, such as avoiding direct sunlight exposure and parking with the wipers in an upright position, can extend their service life. Although sensor-activated automatic wipers can self-adjust, attention should still be paid to the condition of the rubber blades and windshield cleanliness to ensure optimal performance.
