Why does NA sound better than turbo?

The sound of naturally aspirated (NA) engines is generally considered more pleasant than that of turbocharged engines, mainly due to differences in their working principles and structures. NA engines draw air directly into the cylinders, resulting in a more linear and smooth combustion process. In contrast, turbocharged engines produce additional airflow noise and pressure relief sounds due to the turbocharger compressing air. Although they deliver a stronger power surge at low speeds, the accompanying deep roar and sudden sound changes caused by turbo lag may seem less refined. Additionally, the simpler mechanical structure of NA engines reduces friction and vibration from the high-speed operation of turbochargers, further enhancing the purity of the exhaust note. From a driving experience perspective, the sound of NA engines is closer to the original charm of traditional internal combustion engines, while turbocharged engines emphasize a sense of power. The two styles are distinct, but most enthusiasts prefer the elegance and harmony of NA engines.
