Most modern vehicles are currently equipped with an automatic headlight function, but the AUTO mode needs to be manually activated to enable automatic on/off operation. Operationally, the light control knob on the left side of the steering wheel or the centre console is usually turned to the AUTO position; for some models, it needs to be enabled through the vehicle settings menu on the central control screen. The system monitors ambient light via a photosensitive sensor inside the front windshield, automatically turning on the low beams in low-light environments such as tunnels, dusk, or rainy days, and turning them off when sufficient light is detected. The sensitivity of automatic headlights can be adjusted in different vehicle models; for example, medium sensitivity can be set for urban driving to reduce false triggers, while higher sensitivity is suitable for highways. Some high-end models also offer extended functions such as automatic high-beam switching and cornering steering-assisted lighting, but the core functionality remains part of the driver assistance system and cannot fully replace human judgment. It is recommended that vehicle owners regularly check the headlight beam angle, manually adjust the height when the load changes, and clean the sensor area every six months to ensure proper functionality.
