Driving with defective headlights may result in a 1-point penalty and RM200 fine, with more severe consequences including civil or criminal liabilities for accidents caused by impaired visibility or inadequate warning signals. Notably, illegal modifications such as installing xenon headlights or non-compliant light colors (e.g. blue) are prohibited, as original equipment must conform to Malaysian standards (UNECE R48 or nationally certified equivalents). While side lamps may serve as temporary measures during nighttime breakdowns, they do not fulfill legal headlight requirements, and prompt professional repair remains mandatory.
