The brightness of fog lights is not necessarily higher than that of headlights, but there are significant differences between the two in design and function. They typically feature higher brightness and a broader beam pattern, making them suitable for nighttime or low-light conditions. In contrast, fog lights are specifically engineered for low-visibility scenarios such as fog or heavy rain. Their light exhibits superior penetration, often employing a yellow light source (approximately 3000K colour temperature). By utilizing a lower mounting position (250-800 mm above ground level) and a specially calibrated beam dispersion (5° vertically and 45° horizontally), they minimize light reflection by fog particles, thereby more effectively illuminating the immediate road surface and lateral obstacles. While fog lights may not match headlights in absolute luminous intensity, they offer greater functional utility and safety advantages in adverse weather conditions. Importantly, fog lights should not be activated unnecessarily, as their intense scattered light may impair other drivers' visibility. The judicious use of both lighting systems can optimize driving safety.
