Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREV) are essentially a special form of hybrid technology, but their working principle differs significantly from that of traditional Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). With a battery capacity typically ranging from 20 to 40 kWh and support for external charging, EREVs offer a pure electric range of 100-200 kilometres. In contrast, conventional HEVs feature smaller battery capacities (1-2 kWh), lack external charging capability, continuously engage the engine for propulsion, and provide a mere 1-3 kilometres of pure electric range. Technically, while EREVs are categorized as a hybrid variant, their electricity-dominant nature aligns them more closely with electrification, making them particularly suitable for users with access to charging infrastructure and occasional long-distance needs, whereas HEVs better suit scenarios without charging access but with fuel efficiency priorities. Policy distinctions also exist: EREVs typically qualify for incentives like new energy license plates, whereas HEVs, due to differing technical orientations, are ineligible for comparable benefits.
