EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) combines the advantages of pure electric vehicles and fuel-powered vehicles. Its core value lies in using an internal combustion engine to generate electricity for the battery to supply power continuously, thereby eliminating range anxiety. Compared to traditional fuel-powered vehicles, EREV can achieve zero emissions during short-distance urban driving, while relying on the range extender to generate electricity during long-distance travel, resulting in significantly lower overall fuel consumption. For example, some models can maintain a fuel consumption of only 3-5 litres per 100 kilometres. Technically, EREVs typically have smaller battery packs than pure electric vehicles, reducing both battery costs and weight, while also decreasing reliance on charging infrastructure. For users, EREVs qualify for the same tax incentives as electric vehicles (such as Malaysia's electric vehicle import duty exemption), and have lower maintenance costs than conventional fuel-powered vehicles since the internal combustion engine serves solely as a generator, minimizing mechanical wear. In the market, domestic brands like Proton have begun introducing EREV models. EREVs remain approximately 15%-20% more expensive than comparable fuel-powered vehicles, though long-term fuel savings and environmental benefits can offset the higher initial investment.
