What are the rules of EREV?

EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) must comply with the following rules in Malaysia: First, according to the Ministry of Transport's plan, pure electric vehicles (BEVs) are required to use special license plates starting with "EV" and embedded with an RFID chip. However, this regulation does not apply to plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and existing owners may voluntarily replace their license plates. Second, as one of the electrified vehicle types, EREVs will have a transparent road tax calculation method and enjoy a lower tax rate compared to traditional fuel vehicles. However, the tax exemption policy may be adjusted after 2025, so official updates should be monitored. Additionally, micro electric vehicles such as electric bicycles must comply with the MS 2514 standard (speed ≤25 km/h, power ≤250 W, no throttle device, and equipped with pedals). Non-compliant vehicles are prohibited from road use, with violators facing a fine of RM300. For importing EREVs and related components, SIRIM certification and an MITI import license are required, and vehicles must be registered with JPJ. These regulations aim to balance technological advancement with road safety while fostering green mobility.
