EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) does support external charging. Its technical principle is similar to that of PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), but it places more emphasis on pure electric drive characteristics. EREV is equipped with a larger-capacity battery pack (with an electric-only range usually exceeding 100 kilometres) and can be recharged via charging piles or household power sources. When the battery is low, the on-board range extender (a fuel engine) will start to generate electricity to power the battery instead of directly driving the wheels. This design can significantly reduce fuel consumption and extend the combined range. Compared to HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle, non-plug-in), EREV has a larger battery capacity, higher charging flexibility, and can enjoy new energy vehicle policy benefits (such as green license plates and purchase tax exemptions). EREV relies on the range extender to generate electricity when the battery is low. If it is used for frequent long-distance driving, the fuel consumption may be close to that of traditional fuel vehicles. Therefore, it is more suitable for users who have stable charging conditions and mainly use it for urban commuting.
