Did cars in the 1950s have turn signals?

Cars in the 1950s were indeed equipped with turn signal devices, but their technical forms differed significantly from those of today. Meanwhile, some jeeps and motorcycles of the same period already used electrically powered illuminated turn signals, which required manual rotation of a switch to control the direction indication. The popularization of electronic turn signals began in the late 1930s, when Buick pioneered the introduction of a relay-controlled flashing turn signal system. However, until the 1950s, mechanical and electronic devices might still have coexisted in the Malaysian market. Yellow turn signals became mainstream due to their strong visibility, and the basic principles of their flashing frequency standard (60-80 times per minute) and malfunction indication function (increased frequency) had already been established at that time. These technological developments reflect the critical transition phase from mechanical operation to electrification in automotive safety design, laying the foundation for the integration and intelligence of modern turn signals.
