The core difference between distracted driving and inattentive driving lies in the initiative and continuity of attention shift. Distracted driving refers to the driver actively diverting attention to behaviors unrelated to driving, such as operating a mobile phone, eating, or adjusting in-vehicle devices. Such behaviors have clear external triggers and are observable-for example, looking down to check navigation or answering a call directly causes the line of sight to deviate from the road. Inattentive driving, on the other hand, manifests as passive dispersion of attention due to internal factors like fatigue or wandering thoughts. Both prolong reaction time: at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour, a 3-second distraction is equivalent to driving blindly for 84 meters. However, distracted driving, accompanied by physical movements, is more likely to cause the vehicle to drift out of the lane, while inattentiveness is more reflected in delayed responses to traffic signals or sudden situations. For preventive measures, distracted driving requires eliminating specific behaviors like mobile phone use, whereas combating inattentiveness necessitates systematic adjustments such as regular breaks and adequate sleep. Therefore, developing habits like presetting navigation and securing in-vehicle items is crucial for ensuring driving safety.
