Do car cameras record everything?

Dashcams do not record all content continuously. Their operation is primarily based on a loop recording mechanism, typically retaining only the most recent few hours of driving footage. The device captures real-time images of the area in front of or around the vehicle through a built-in camera, while simultaneously recording dynamic data such as vehicle speed, acceleration, steering, and braking via sensors. This information is digitally compressed and stored on a memory card. When storage space approaches capacity, the system automatically overwrites the oldest clips to free up space, meaning non-critical older recordings are progressively replaced. Some high-end models feature a GPS module that can additionally record driving routes and location data, though these are also subject to storage limitations. Users are advised to regularly check memory card status and configure appropriate resolution and loop cycle settings to ensure complete preservation of critical data.
