The choice between 5W40 and 5W30 engine oils should be comprehensively determined based on vehicle condition, driving habits, and climatic conditions. Both have the same low-temperature performance (5W indicates suitability for -30°C environments), but their high-temperature viscosities differ significantly. 5W30 has a high-temperature kinematic viscosity range of 9.3-12.5 mm²/s, offering better fluidity and faster cold-start response. It is suitable for new vehicles (under 100,000 km mileage), Japanese, Korean, and American models, as well as urban commuting, and can reduce fuel consumption by 0.3-0.5 litres per 100 km. 5W40 has a high-temperature viscosity of 12.5-16.3 mm²/s, forming a thicker oil film with enhanced sealing and high-temperature protection. It is recommended for German turbocharged vehicles, older engines (over 100,000 km mileage), or aggressive driving conditions, and can reduce oil burning (oil loss over 5,000 km can be decreased by more than 50%). In colder northern regions, 5W30 is advised for year-round use, while in hotter southern climates or during extended highway driving, 5W40 may be used as needed.
