In cold weather, 5W20 engine oil has advantages over 5W30. Both oils have the same low-temperature starting performance (the "5W" indicates they can flow normally at -30°C), but 5W20 has a lower high-temperature kinematic viscosity (5.6-9.3 mm²/s). Its superior low-temperature flow characteristics enable faster formation of an oil film covering engine components during cold starts, reducing startup wear and improving fuel economy. However, for turbocharged models, vehicles with over 80,000 kilometres of mileage, or those frequently operating under high-load conditions (such as regular highway driving), the thicker high-temperature oil film of 5W30 (9.3-12.5 mm²/s) provides better sealing and wear protection. When selecting, always prioritize the vehicle manual's recommendations. If unspecified, 5W20 is advised for short commutes in cold climates, while 5W30 may be preferable for older vehicles or those experiencing significant temperature variations to ensure both cold-start performance and high-temperature protection.
