The three main components of an automobile exhaust system are the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and muffler. The catalytic converter (three-way catalytic converter) converts harmful HC, CO, and NOx into harmless substances through precious metal catalysts such as platinum, rhodium, and palladium. It requires a temperature of around 500°C to operate efficiently, so modern vehicles often position it close to the engine for rapid heat-up. It is predominantly constructed from aluminized stainless steel to prolong its service life, though excessive backpressure may marginally impair engine performance. Additionally, the system incorporates auxiliary components like exhaust pipes and tailpipes, with V-type engines potentially employing a dual-exhaust configuration to enhance efficiency. A clogged catalytic converter or damaged muffler can result in power loss, elevated fuel consumption, or non-compliant emissions, necessitating prompt maintenance to ensure vehicular compliance and environmental performance.
