What are the symptoms of bad steering fluid?

When the power steering fluid deteriorates or is insufficient, various obvious symptoms will appear. If abnormal noises such as creaking or hissing are heard from the steering system, this is typically caused by insufficient fluid leading to inadequate lubrication of the power steering pump or internal component wear. In cases of power steering fluid leakage, reddish or transparent oil stains may be observed at the base of the engine compartment or near the steering gear, accompanied by a persistent decrease in the reservoir's fluid level. Additionally, delayed steering wheel return and unintended vehicle drift during straight-line driving (after ruling out tyre-related factors) may also result from fluid degradation or seal failure. Should the power steering fluid's colour transition from its normal light red/transparent state to dark black or cloudy, this signifies excessive contaminant levels impairing hydraulic system performance. Notably, prolonged use of substandard or overdue power steering fluid accelerates pump wear and may ultimately cause complete steering system failure. It is best to inspect fluid condition biennially or every 40,000 kilometres, using only fluids conforming to JASO or manufacturer-certified standards. Any observed symptoms warrant immediate professional inspection to mitigate safety risks.
