Can I change power steering fluid myself?

Changing power steering fluid can be done by yourself, but it must be carried out strictly in accordance with the standard procedures to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the system. When performing the operation, start the engine and keep it idling, then use a dedicated oil extraction device to completely remove the old fluid from the reservoir to avoid residual contaminants compromising the performance of the new fluid. After filling with new fluid that meets OEM specifications, turn the steering wheel fully left and right 15-20 times to circulate the fluid; this process helps the new fluid flush out deposits in the lines. Subsequently, drain the reservoir again and repeat the refilling process 2-3 times. It is best to use OEM-approved products such as Petronas Syntium Power Steering Fluid or Shell Donax TX that meet JASO certification standards, with replacement intervals of every 50,000 kilometres or 24 months. Vehicles equipped with Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems do not require this maintenance, while hydraulic power steering models must adhere to regular fluid changes to prevent steering pump wear or seal deterioration. Always wear protective gloves during operation, avoid contact between the fluid and hot components, and dispose of used fluid at designated recycling facilities.
