Power steering fluid is a specialized hydraulic oil designed for hydraulic power steering systems. Its primary function is to amplify the driver's steering input through hydraulic transmission, enabling lighter and more precise vehicle steering. It maintains performance within a temperature range of -40°C to 120°C while providing lubrication to steering gear components and preventing corrosion. Important safety notes: The fluid contains chemical additives that require immediate skin washing upon contact and can damage automotive paint and rubber components. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend using either Dexron-series fluids or OEM-specified products, with replacement intervals of 2-3 years or 40,000-50,000 kilometres. Fluid degradation manifests as cloudiness and darkening, while mixing incompatible types may cause steering pump failure. Certain models permit substitution with specific automatic transmission fluids (ATF), but strict adherence to manufacturer guidelines is mandatory. Maintenance procedures involve checking the reservoir level against marked indicators. Note that while Electronic Power Steering (EPS) systems eliminate traditional hydraulic fluid requirements, hybrid vehicles may incorporate electro-hydraulic systems that still demand periodic servicing.
