How often should a spark plug be replaced?

The replacement cycle of spark plugs mainly depends on their material and the vehicle's engine model. It is generally recommended to replace them after driving 40,000 to 60,000 kilometres. Ordinary nickel alloy spark plugs have a shorter lifespan and require replacement approximately every 20,000 kilometres. Platinum spark plugs can last up to 40,000 kilometres, while high-performance iridium spark plugs can endure for 60,000 to 80,000 kilometres. For instance, BMW N-series engines require replacement every 40,000 kilometres, whereas B-series engines reduce this interval to 20,000 kilometres. If abnormalities such as electrode erosion, excessive carbon buildup, or cracks are observed in the spark plugs, they should be replaced promptly to maintain engine performance. During replacement, ensure the heat range is appropriate for the vehicle model. Spark plugs for turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines are not interchangeable. Regular maintenance enhances fuel efficiency and reduces emissions, but premature replacement of high-quality OEM spark plugs is unnecessary.
