BMW X2

2026-09-24 08:30:01

The BMW X2 is a compact luxury sports SUV from the BMW Group, first unveiled in October 2017. Built on BMW's UKL front-wheel-drive platform, it is positioned between the X1 and X3, establishing itself as one of the most distinctive models in BMW's SUV stable courtesy of its unique coupe-SUV crossover profile and dynamic chassis tuning. As of June 2026, the BMW X2 has entered its second generation.

Model Overview

Positioned as a compact luxury coupe SUV, the BMW X2's core appeal centres on its expressive crossover silhouette and signature BMW driving dynamics, primarily targeting younger buyers seeking bold styling and an engaging driving experience. The second-generation BMW X2 made its global debut and went on sale in February 2024, growing significantly in dimensions to 4,554–4,558 mm (length) × 1,845 mm (width) × 1,590–1,594 mm (height) with a 2,692 mm wheelbase, representing a length increase of around 20 cm over its predecessor.

In the Chinese market, the BMW X2 adopted a two-pronged sales strategy comprising both imported and locally assembled variants. The locally produced version (BMW Brilliance X2) was launched in October 2019, priced between RM266,800 and RM329,800. The imported 2025/2026 sDrive25i M Sport starts from RM248,000. The 2024 imported lineup comprised three variants, including the range-topping M35i high-performance model, priced from RM316,900 to RM419,900. The second-generation model rolls off the line alongside the all-new BMW X1 and iX1 at BMW Group Plant Regensburg in Germany.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the BMW X2 embodies BMW's dedicated SAC (Sports Activity Coupé) design philosophy. Up front, the signature kidney grille takes on an angular hexagonal contour with larger proportions than before, with higher-spec variants featuring illuminated LED contour lighting. Sharp LED headlamp clusters flank the front end, pairing with an aggressive front bumper to deliver a commanding road presence.

The side profile is defined by taut, sweeping lines, where the fastback roofline and low-slung stance (achieving a drag coefficient as low as 0.28 Cd) accentuate its athletic character. The BMW roundel badge mounted on the C-pillar pays homage to iconic classics such as the BMW 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL Coupe. At the rear, the sculpted tail is complemented by slim LED tail lamps and twin single-exit exhaust tailpipes (quad tailpipes on the M35i), further accentuating its sporty intent. The vehicle is available in two distinct styling packages: M Sport and M Off-road.

Inside, the second-generation BMW X2 adopts the marque's latest family cockpit architecture. Centred around the driver, the cabin features the BMW Curved Display, seamlessly integrating a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.7-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Upholstery comes standard in Sensatec synthetic leather, with premium Vernasca leather available on higher trims. Variants fitted with the M Sport Pro package and above receive an M leather steering wheel, sport seats, and metallic pedals. The seats are finished in a leather/Alcantara combination and come standard with adjustable under-thigh support.

Powertrain & Performance

The second-generation BMW X2 is powered exclusively by 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol engines, offered in various output tunes.

sDrive25i / xDrive25i: Delivers a maximum output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 300 Nm of peak torque, completing the 0–100 km/h sprint in 7.4–7.7 seconds. The engine is paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). In terms of drivetrain layout, sDrive is front-wheel drive (FWD), whereas xDrive provides real-time all-wheel drive (AWD).

M35i High-Performance: Powered by an M-tuned 2.0-litre turbo engine producing 221 kW (301 hp) and 400 Nm of torque. It dispatches 0–100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, with xDrive AWD fitted as standard. WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.5–7.9 L/100 km.

Chassis & Handling

The BMW X2 is underpinned by BMW's FAAR front-wheel-drive architecture. The suspension setup utilises front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent setup. The chassis is tuned distinctly for sportiness, delivering a firm, well-planted ride with ample cornering support. Thicker anti-roll bars are fitted to both front and rear axles, helping achieve an almost 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. The Dynamic Performance Control system applies targeted braking to the inner wheels during cornering to sharpen turn-in and maintain mid-corner stability. High-spec xDrive models feature an on-demand all-wheel-drive system, while the M35i adds an M-specific chassis tune alongside Adaptive M suspension. The steering is direct, precise, and communicative.

Cabin & Equipment

On the tech front, the BMW X2 comes standard with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch central touchscreen, powered by the BMW Operating System 9 (iDrive 9.0). The system features the QuickSelect shortcut interface, alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. High-spec variants add a Harman Kardon premium sound system, Head-Up Display (HUD), and a wireless smartphone charging tray. An operable panoramic glass roof is standard across the range. Standard boot space stands at 470 litres, expandable via split-folding rear seats.

Safety & Driver Assistance

The BMW X2 comes comprehensively equipped with active safety systems across the lineup, including Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Blind Spot Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Traffic Sign Recognition, and Reversing Assistant. In terms of passive safety, the vehicle is fitted with six airbags as standard, along with run-flat tyres and passive pedestrian protection. Higher-spec models can be specified with Level 2 driving assist (featuring Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centring Assist). Parking Assistant is also on board to handle automated parking manoeuvres. Electronic stability control (DSC) and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) are standard equipment.

Market Performance & Verdict

The BMW X2's market journey in China was largely a case of critical acclaim failing to translate into showroom success. In 2024, annual deliveries in China fell below 15,000 units, representing roughly 18% of the sales volume achieved by the sister BMW X1. In 2025, sales plunged further to just 108 units. As a result, the locally assembled BMW Brilliance X2 was phased out in September 2023, while imported models were officially discontinued in the Chinese market in 2026. Industry analysts point to its niche positioning and BMW's broader strategic shift towards electrification as key factors behind its withdrawal.

Automotive media reviews highlight that the BMW X2's primary strengths lie in its head-turning fastback silhouette, agile handling, and the robust powertrain in the M35i variant. On the downside, rear headroom is noticeably compromised by the sweeping roofline, the firm suspension setup detracts from ride comfort over rough tarmac, and tyre roar is prominent. As a compact lifestyle sports SUV prioritising personal flair over outright practicality, the BMW X2 stayed true to its athletic ethos, though its market trajectory mirrors the stiff headwinds faced by niche, entry-level luxury offerings in China.
