Model Overview

The BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid is the electrified arm of the BMW Group's mid-to-large luxury SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) X5 lineup, currently offered across two generations: the xDrive45e and xDrive50e. Serving as a pivotal model in the X5's transition from pure ICE power to electrification, the range retains the X5's formidable all-terrain capability and practical, generous cabin space while delivering the flexibility of petrol-electric dual propulsion via a P2 architecture plug-in hybrid system.
In the Chinese market, the xDrive45e is priced at RM849,900, while the 2022 xDrive45e M Sport variant carried an official recommended retail price of RM859,900. In international markets, the xDrive50e is already on sale in countries including Malaysia.
Design Language
Styling-wise, the BMW X5 PHEV retains the classic silhouette of the standard petrol-powered X5 without overtly shouting its new energy identity. Up front, the signature kidney grille is finished with subtle chrome accents. Flanking the grille are signature BMW headlamp clusters incorporating dual L-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and BMW Laserlight high beams. A charging flap is positioned on the front left fender, while model-specific rear badging reading "xDrive45e" or "xDrive50e" distinguishes the plug-in hybrid variants.
In terms of dimensions, the xDrive45e measures 4,930 mm in length, 2,004 mm in width, and 1,767 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,975 mm. In selected markets, the xDrive50e comes standard with the M Sport package, which adds bespoke alloy wheels, sportier bumpers, and M Sport badges on the front fenders for a more aggressive visual stance.
Inside, the cabin retains BMW's latest luxury design ethos, with the fully digital instrument cluster updated to display EV-specific readouts, including pure electric range and battery state-of-charge. Higher-spec variants are swathed in premium Merino full-grain leather upholstery, available in black and brown dual-tone finishes. An 11-colour ambient lighting system is also equipped.
Powertrain and Performance
The BMW X5 PHEV is powered by a plug-in hybrid system combining a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine and an electric motor.
xDrive45e: The petrol engine produces 286 hp, supplemented by an electric motor delivering 82 kW (112 hp) to achieve a combined system output of 394 hp (290 kW) and a peak torque of 600 Nm. The 0-100 km/h century sprint is completed in 5.6 seconds, with a top speed of 235 km/h (capped at 140 km/h in pure EV mode). It offers an NEDC-rated all-electric range of 85 km.
xDrive50e (2024 facelift): Combined system output is increased to 489 hp with a peak torque of 700 Nm, cutting the 0-100 km/h sprint down to 4.8 seconds. The pure electric range is boosted to 110 km, powered by a battery pack with a gross capacity of 29.5 kWh (usable capacity of 25.7 kWh).
Both generations are paired with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. For charging, the xDrive50e supports AC charging up to 7.4 kW. Latest updates also reveal that the next-generation X5 PHEV (50e xDrive) will feature an upgraded engine pushing 312 hp and an uprated electric motor producing 197 hp, paired with an 18.7 kWh battery for an estimated pure electric range of up to 96.6 km.
Chassis and Handling
Under the skin, the X5 PHEV comes standard with adaptive air suspension and a head-up display across the range. Suspension hardware consists of a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear independent setup paired with the xDrive intelligent AWD system. Newer iterations also introduce active anti-roll bars and four-wheel steering (Integral Active Steering), tuned primarily to enhance day-to-day ride comfort. The hybrid setup adopts a P2 configuration, mounting the electric motor directly between the combustion engine and the gearbox.
Cabin and Equipment
Inside the cabin, the X5 PHEV is equipped with a 12.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment display that supports voice command control and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Heated front seats are fitted as standard, with heated second-row seats available as an option. Higher-spec variants gain a premium Harman Kardon surround sound system. The 2024 model also adopts a restyled gear selector toggle.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety-wise, the X5 PHEV comes standard with passive safety equipment including front, front side, and curtain airbags. Active safety systems encompass tyre pressure monitoring, seatbelt reminders, electronic stability control, and traction control. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) include standard Front Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking. Full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control is an optional add-on (approx. RM9,300), alongside optional Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keeping Assist. The latest-generation model will also offer optional Level 3 automated driving capabilities.
Market Performance and Evaluation
The BMW X5 PHEV continues to deliver steady performance in global markets. In the Philippines, BMW PHEV sales climbed 19% year-on-year in Q1 2026, with the X5 PHEV serving as a core sales driver alongside the X3 PHEV and X1 PHEV. In China, the xDrive45e established a firm foothold in the premium PHEV SUV segment thanks to green-plate policy benefits, robust 3.0T six-cylinder performance, and an 85 km electric range. Its chief rivals include the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350e and Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid. Overall, as the electrified pillar of the X5 family, the BMW X5 PHEV carves out a distinctive identity in the luxury mid-to-large SUV market, blending sportiness with environmental efficiency through its P2 PHEV architecture, brisk 5.6-second century sprint, and versatile petrol-electric drivability.
