Claims Settlement Process

2026-10-29 16:40:03

The Claims Settlement Process refers to the standardized operating procedure following an insured accident during the tenure of a motor insurance policy, spanning accident occurrence, notification, inspection, loss adjusting, claims assessment, through to the final payout. This process represents the insurer's core operational obligation to deliver contractual compensation, where its procedural rigour and efficiency directly dictate the quality of motor insurance service and the swift realization of the policyholder's entitlements.

Standard Stages of Motor Insurance Claims Settlement

Motor vehicle insurance claims operations strictly adhere to statutory and industry regulations, typically involving five key stages:

Accident Reporting and Initial Lodgement:

Following an insured accident, the policyholder, tortfeasor, or driver must promptly lodge a report with the traffic police and notify the insurer within the stipulated timeframe (typically within 48 hours). Upon receiving the notification, the insurer's customer service centre will guide the motorist on necessary towing and safety measures before assigning an adjuster/surveyor.

Site Survey and Liability Determination:

An appointed claims adjuster will attend the scene (or assess via remote video survey systems) to document evidence, verify the circumstances of the accident, and ascertain vehicle damage as well as casualties. Based on the official police investigation report, the adjuster will determine whether the claim falls under policy liability and assess the respective apportionment of fault.

Damage Assessment and Loss Adjusting:

Following survey verification, the insurer and the policyholder (or the authorized panel workshop) jointly inspect and appraise the damaged vehicle to confirm repair scopes, replacement parts, and labour charges. If third-party bodily injury/death or property damage is involved, loss adjusting is carried out concurrently in line with medical schedules or loss valuations.

Documentation Submission and Claims Vetting:

The policyholder compiles and submits the complete set of claim documents (including the insurance certificate, driving licence, vehicle ownership certificate/VOC, police report, repair bills, medical receipts, etc.). The insurer's claims vetting team verifies the authenticity and legality of all submissions, computing the final settlement amount based on the policy excess, deductibles, and liability proportions.

Settlement Approvals, Archiving, and Payout:

Upon final internal approval, the insurer issues a settlement offer to the policyholder and disburses the approved payout directly into the designated bank account of the claimant or third party, thereby completing financial settlement and electronic case closure.

Digitalization and Streamlined Mechanisms in Modern Motor Claims

With the rapid adoption of InsurTech, conventional motor claims processes are progressively shifting toward intelligent, digitalized channels:

Fast-Track Minor Accident Settlement and Online Video Inspection:

For minor traffic incidents with clear liability, undisputed facts, and no severe injuries, motorists can perform live video assessments via official traffic platforms or mobile insurance apps for immediate self-recording and departure, significantly mitigating traffic congestion and roadside waiting time.

Paperless Processing of Claims Documentation:

Leveraging e-policies, e-invoices, and direct system integration with traffic authorities and healthcare providers, many regions now facilitate paperless claims processing with automated verification, drastically shortening turnaround times from initial reporting to final payout.
