Ferrari Monza SP1

2026-09-25 07:00:24

The Ferrari Monza SP1 is a limited-edition single-seater road-going sports car unveiled in 2018 by Italian supercar maker Ferrari, serving as the inaugural model for the brand's all-new ICONA series. The "Monza" nameplate pays tribute to the marque's illustrious racing heritage at Italy's Monza circuit, with styling heavily inspired by iconic 1950s Ferrari Barchetta racers such as the 166 MM, 750 Monza, and 860 Monza. Together with the two-seater SP2, the SP1 forms the debut duo of the ICONA line-up. Global production of the Monza SP1 is strictly capped at 499 units, offered exclusively to Ferrari's top-tier VIP clientele via private allocation rather than open market sale. The speedster was also awarded the prestigious German iF Design Gold Award in 2019.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the Monza SP1 embraces a retro-inspired aesthetic seamlessly integrated with modern aerodynamic principles. Up front, a wide, low-slung nose is paired with a prominent cooling air dam to deliver an aggressive racing stance. The side profile showcases a clean, minimalist, and taut silhouette accentuated by eye-catching scoop-style side vents. Taking cues from the rear-end styling of the 750 Monza and 375 MM, the tail features an elegant, continuous light bar that functions as both the taillight and brake light. The bodywork is constructed extensively from carbon fibre, keeping dry weight down to a mere 1,500kg. Its defining hallmark is the complete omission of a roof and conventional windscreen, adopting an asymmetrical single-seat cockpit layout. The doors boast a unique upward-opening scissor design. With its boundary-pushing retro aesthetics, the Monza SP1 bagged the 2019 iF Design Gold Award.

Powertrain and Performance

Powering the Monza SP1 is a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine derived from the 812 Superfast. This 65-degree V12 powerhouse churns out a massive 810 hp (596kW) and 719 Nm of peak torque, paired with a fast-shifting 7-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission. In terms of outright performance, the 0-100 km/h sprint is dispatched in just 2.9 seconds, 0-200 km/h is achieved in 7.9 seconds, and the top speed exceeds 300 km/h.

Chassis and Handling

The Monza SP1 is built upon the 812 Superfast's chassis architecture, featuring a wheelbase of 2,720mm and sharing the same suspension layout. Dynamic agility is enhanced by sophisticated electronic chassis systems, notably the Virtual Short Wheelbase (Passo Corto Virtuale) system—first seen on the F12tdf and 812 Superfast—alongside EPS (Electric Power Steering). Exceptional stopping power is provided by high-performance carbon-ceramic brake discs measuring 398mm at the front and 360mm at the rear.

Cockpit and Features

The Monza SP1 adopts a purist, dedicated single-seat layout. The driver-centric cockpit arranges all vital switchgear, dials, and controls intuitively around the driving position. The interior is lavishly appointed with exposed carbon fibre and heritage-style leather upholstery. Seating is provided by a GT2 monocoque racing seat fitted with a four-point harness. The instrument cluster features an iconic yellow centre-mounted analogue dial, complemented by paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. The Monza SP1 is also equipped with Ferrari's patented "Virtual Windshield" technology—an aerodynamic deflector integrated ahead of the instrument panel and steering wheel that channels airflow over the cockpit to ensure driving comfort without a physical windscreen. In addition, Ferrari partnered with luxury houses such as Loro Piana and Berluti to create bespoke racing suits, helmets, driving gloves, and curated accessories exclusively for owners.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The Monza SP1 is equipped with active and passive safety features meeting contemporary standards. Due to the roofless and screenless design, the driver must wear a dedicated racing helmet behind the wheel. In terms of passive safety, the carbon-fibre monocoque tub provides outstanding structural rigidity and impact protection. On the active safety and convenience front, the car comes equipped with features such as a front suspension lift system and parking cameras.

Market Performance and Reception

Total production of the Monza series is strictly limited to 499 units globally (combined across SP1 and SP2). The official base price was approximately RM1,580,000, with overseas markets seeing starting prices ranging from RM1,400,000 to RM2,500,000. Allocation was conducted strictly on an invitation-only basis, reserved exclusively for Ferrari's most loyal SVIP collectors. In the secondary market, the model's extreme rarity has seen values soar; a 2019 Monza SP1 with just 26 km on the odometer once changed hands for RM2,420,000. As the trailblazer of Ferrari's ICONA series, the Monza SP1 successfully established a new design direction for the brand by blending legendary historic styling with cutting-edge engineering.
