First Service

2026-10-11 18:00:01

First service, or the initial maintenance service, is the first routine maintenance carried out once a new car completes its running-in period. It primarily involves replacing the engine oil and oil filter, alongside a comprehensive inspection of the vehicle's core components.

⏱️ When is the First Service Due?

The first service interval is determined by two metrics: mileage and period of ownership, whichever comes first.

  • Typical mileage: The vast majority of petrol and diesel car brands set the first service between 3,000 and 5,000 km. Certain German or premium marques may extend this to 7,500–10,000 km.

  • Typical timeframe: 3 to 6 months after collecting your car.

Important note: Even if you have not hit the mileage threshold, the service must still be carried out once the time limit is reached. Factory-fill engine oil degrades and oxidises over time, and metal debris accumulated during the run-in phase needs to be flushed out promptly.

🛠️ What Does the First Service Entail?

The first service is typically a complimentary service provided by the manufacturer, focusing primarily on the oil change and a multi-point vehicle health check.

Core essential items:

  1. Engine oil and oil filter replacement: This is the most crucial part of the first service, designed to flush out microscopic metal shavings generated during the engine run-in process and ensure optimal lubrication.

  2. Multi-point vehicle inspection: The 4S centre will perform several complimentary checks, including tyre pressures and tread wear, all exterior lights, fluid levels (brake fluid, engine coolant, etc.), chassis bolt torquing, the braking system, and checks for any fluid leaks.

Common misconception: Many car owners assume tyre pressures are factory-set to standard values. However, tyres are intentionally over-inflated at the factory to prevent flat-spotting during shipping and transit. During the first service, service technicians will adjust them to the recommended pressure for optimal driving safety and tyre life.

📋 Checklist Before Sending Your Car for First Service

  • Book in advance: It is advisable to book an appointment with your authorised 4S service centre beforehand to avoid long waiting times. Remember to bring along your service booklet, vehicle registration card (VOC/Geran), and sales invoice.

  • Decline unnecessary add-ons: The first service is completely free of charge. If service advisors recommend optional paid add-ons such as engine flushes, fuel additives, or running-in engine treatments, you can politely decline—these are not necessary for a brand-new car.

First service policies may vary slightly across different car marques. For the most accurate details, always refer to your vehicle’s official Owner’s Manual or Service Booklet, which outlines the manufacturer-specified service intervals and inspection items.
