Front airbags generally refer to the driver's airbag and front passenger airbag, which together form the first line of defence in protecting front occupants during severe frontal collisions.
Driver Airbag: Located in the centre of the steering wheel, marked with "AIRBAG". In a frontal impact, it deploys rapidly to protect the driver's head and chest, preventing direct impact against the steering wheel.
Front Passenger Airbag: Installed on the right side of the dashboard (typically above the glove compartment), also marked with "AIRBAG". It cushions the front passenger's head and chest during a crash, preventing secondary impact with the dashboard.
Front airbags do not deploy in all collisions; specific triggering conditions must be met:
Primary Deployment Scenarios: They are typically triggered only when the vehicle is subjected to a moderate to severe frontal collision or an angled frontal impact.
Scenarios Where They May Not Deploy: Front airbags may not deploy under the following circumstances:
Minor frontal impacts
Side impacts or rear-end collisions (protected by other dedicated airbags)
Vehicle rollovers
When the ignition is switched off
The protective effectiveness of airbags depends heavily on observing the following rules:
Always fasten your seatbelt: The airbag is a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and must work in tandem with a seatbelt. Without a fastened seatbelt, the deploying airbag can cause severe injuries.
Maintain a safe distance: Keep your chest at least 25 cm away from the centre of the steering wheel. Slide the seat as far back as comfortably possible while ensuring full control of the pedals and steering wheel.
Maintain a proper seating posture: Sit upright with your back firmly against the seat backrest and both feet flat on the floor. Never rest your feet or place items over airbag deployment zones.
Never place loose items on airbag covers: Never mount phone holders, air fresheners, ornaments, or any accessories over areas marked "SRS AIRBAG", such as the steering wheel pad or the top of the dashboard. In an airbag deployment, these objects can become hazardous projectiles, resulting in serious injury.
Child safety is a strict rule: It is strictly prohibited to install a rear-facing child safety seat on a front seat equipped with an active frontal airbag. In a collision, the immense force of the deploying airbag can cause fatal injuries to a child.
Airbags are single-use safety devices and must be replaced immediately once deployed. Always pay attention to the SRS warning light on the instrument cluster; it should illuminate briefly during the start-up self-check and then go off. If it stays on, it indicates a system malfunction that requires immediate inspection and repair.
