The JAC A5 PLUS is a C-segment fastback sedan introduced by JAC Motors in 2023. Pre-bookings opened on 1 June 2023, followed by its official launch on 24 June. Positioned as a "dynamic fastback family sedan", it primarily targeted the RM70,000-bracket family car market. The model debuted with four variants, priced between RM65,800 and RM85,800. In 2024, JAC introduced the Tribute Edition, lowering the entry-level price to RM59,800. At the upper end, derivatives like the 184 hp 1.5T Flagship Edition and the Premium Smart Connected Edition—featuring a JBL sound system and 64-colour ambient lighting—were added, widening the overall price spectrum to between RM59,800 and RM139,800. Powered entirely by a 1.5T turbocharged petrol engine mated to either a 6-speed manual, a CVT, or a 6-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT), the A5 PLUS serves as a key strategic model in JAC’s brand revitalization campaign in the passenger car segment.
Aesthetically, the JAC A5 PLUS adopts JAC’s latest corporate styling cues. Up front, it features a split-headlamp layout with an aggressive X-pattern matrix blade grille flanked by carbon-fibre-style garnishes, lending the car a distinctly sporty presence. The matrix LED headlamps pack 142 individual LED diodes, while the full-width LED taillight cluster houses 181 diodes with nine vertical 3D light strips on each side, ensuring high nighttime visibility. Along the flanks, a sharp character line creates a dynamic, nose-down stance complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels. Round the back, the rear bumper integrates dual exhaust outlets on either side.
Dimensionally, the A5 PLUS measures 4,780 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, and 1,492 mm tall, riding on a 2,770 mm wheelbase—substantially larger than standard C-segment offerings and firmly in A+/long-wheelbase territory. Its standout design feature is the wide-aperture fastback tailgate, which helps achieve a low drag coefficient of 0.26 Cd. The boot opening is twice as wide as that of a conventional three-box sedan, expanding to a massive 1,650 litres with the 60:40 rear seats folded flat to provide an unobstructed 1.8-metre loading bed.
Inside, the cabin takes design inspiration from the Sehol A5, featuring a sporty four-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and a portrait-oriented 10.4-inch floating central touchscreen flanked by sleek chrome accents.
Under the bonnet, the JAC A5 PLUS is offered with two states of tune for its 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. The mainstream variants run the HFC4GB2.4E 1.5T multi-point injection unit producing 110 kW (around 150 hp) and 210 Nm of torque across a 2,000–4,500 rpm band. Drive is sent to the front wheels via either a 6-speed manual or a CVT gearbox, achieving a top speed of 170 km/h. Meanwhile, the 2023 1.5TGDI Flagship Edition gets direct-injection technology, pushing output to 184 hp via a 6-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the high-volume CVT variant returns a WLTC combined fuel consumption figure of 7.44 L/100 km and comes with a 55-litre fuel tank. The entire range meets China 6 emission standards and is compatible with RON 92 petrol and above.
Chassis dynamics are where the JAC A5 PLUS truly sets itself apart in this price category. It rides on a MacPherson strut front setup and an E-type multi-link independent rear suspension, with all-wheel independent suspension fitted as standard across the range. Jointly calibrated with Magna, the setup offers superior handling agility, bump absorption, and body control compared to segment rivals that commonly make do with a simpler rear torsion beam setup. Steering is managed by an electric power steering (EPS) rack, while stopping power comes courtesy of front ventilated discs and solid rear discs paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). The car rides on 215/50 R17 tyres and carries a space-saver spare wheel.
For driving assistance, the A5 PLUS comes equipped with cruise control, Auto Brake Hold, and Hill-start Assist Control as standard. Range-topping trims add a 360-degree high-definition surround-view camera system powered by four 1.3-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lenses.
The smart cockpit is one of the A5 PLUS's key selling points. Every variant gets a 10.4-inch floating touchscreen infotainment unit, with mid-to-high trims gaining a 7-inch digital driver display. Running on an Android 9.0-based OS with a high-performance 6-core processor, the infotainment system integrates iFlytek voice command technology to deliver three core smart assistant suites: the Voice Butler provides accurate sound-source localization and voice control over navigation, telephony, multimedia, windows, sunroof, and air conditioning; the Lifestyle Butler incorporates onboard 4G Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity, Migu Video, Kuwo Music, KTV karaoke apps, and AutoNavi maps; and the Remote Butler enables smartphone-based remote lock/unlock, vehicle locator, remote engine start, and window controls. Smartphone screen mirroring, telematics, and OTA software updates are fully supported.
On the comfort front, the A5 PLUS features class-exclusive integrated sports bucket seats engineered via 3D ergonomic simulation mapping 2,329 support points. The rear roofliner incorporates a dedicated scalloped recess to maximise passenger headroom. High-spec models add a power-adjustable heated driver seat, rear air-con vents, and power-folding heated side mirrors with auto-fold upon locking. Audio is delivered via either a standard 4-speaker setup or a premium JBL sound system, depending on the variant.
On the safety front, the JAC A5 PLUS utilises a high-strength safety cage construction, with high-strength steel making up 58.7% of the body structure, alongside a flexibly mounted front perimeter subframe. The rear bumper crash beam uses a lightweight polymer composite that offers both weight reduction and high impact absorption. In terms of passive safety, the Tribute Edition is fitted with dual front airbags, whereas all other variants come standard with four airbags covering the front occupants with front and side thorax protection. Active safety gear includes ABS, EBD, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), and Traction Control System (TCS) across the board. High-grade variants feature a 360-degree camera and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Additionally, the interior meets "5A-grade Healthy Cabin" standards, complying with rigorous certifications for eco-friendly materials, air filtration, and low electromagnetic radiation.
When it comes to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), the A5 PLUS is decidedly basic. Apart from standard cruise control, it lacks Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features, leaving a noticeable gap in active driver assist tech compared to similarly priced modern competitors.
The JAC A5 PLUS experienced a classic "fast out of the gate, slow to sustain" market trajectory. It made a strong debut in its launch month (June 2023), recording 4,387 units on the back of considerable public interest. Full-year sales for 2023 reached 24,119 units, accounting for 73.51% of JAC Group's passenger car volume and ranking 41st in China's compact sedan market. However, sales fell off a cliff in 2024, plummeting to just 37 units in January 2024 and 41 units in February, before fading out of official monthly sales charts by November due to negligible volume.
Owner feedback has been noticeably polarised. Positive reviews praise its core strengths: the head-turning fastback silhouette (with many owners reporting curious looks and queries from onlookers), the generous rear legroom afforded by the 2,770 mm wheelbase, the cavernous 1,650-litre boot, the plush ride delivered by the standard multi-link rear suspension, and upmarket perks such as the JBL audio system. On the other hand, criticisms mainly target powertrain refinement, real-world fuel economy, and build quality. Real-world fuel consumption often exceeds 9.0 L/100 km, falling well short of the claimed 7.44 L/100 km rating. Many drivers also noted that the CVT revs excessively high at highway cruising speeds (hovering around 3,000 rpm at 120 km/h), causing unwanted engine drone and hurting fuel efficiency. Other commonly cited complaints include interior cabin rattles, thin exterior paint, and an overly sparse dealer and service network, especially in northern regions where aftersales support is practically non-existent.
As the spearhead of JAC's passenger car revitalization, the JAC A5 PLUS made a compelling value-for-money case on paper, offering fastback styling, long-wheelbase C-segment dimensions, all-round independent suspension, and a 10.4-inch connected cockpit for under RM70,000. However, in an intensely contested C-segment market, the A5 PLUS had to contend with severe price cuts from established joint-venture nameplates like the Sylphy, Lavida, and Corolla, alongside relentless pressure from domestic heavyweights such as the Emgrand, Eado, and Qin PLUS. Ultimately, weak brand equity, lacklustre fuel economy, and an underdeveloped aftersales network prevented the car from translating its initial launch buzz into sustained commercial success.
