Model Overview

The JAC e-J7 is a fully electric sedan introduced by JAC Group, marking the first pure electric model produced on a shared assembly line following the joint venture partnership between JAC and Volkswagen. In China, it is also known as the JAC iC5 (and earlier as the Sehol E50A under the former Sehol marque), whereas overseas markets such as Brazil know it as the e-J7. In January 2022, the e-J7 was officially launched as JAC Motors' 10th electric vehicle offering in Brazil and the market's first-ever fully electric sedan. Engineered on a modular platform and incorporating German VDA quality management standards, the car is positioned as a global electric family sedan.

Design Language

Built on the same platform as the petrol-powered J7, the e-J7's exterior styling seamlessly integrates EV-specific design cues with a sporty aesthetic. Up front, it sports a closed-off grille with the charging port neatly concealed behind the brand emblem. The side profile features a sleek fastback silhouette paired with 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, delivering a dynamic four-door coupe stance. Inside, the cabin adopts a wraparound layout anchored by a portrait-oriented 10.4-inch central touchscreen running the J-Link smart connectivity suite, supporting intelligent voice control, navigation, multimedia entertainment, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Practicality is well-catered for, with split-folding rear seats that allow boot capacity to expand from 540 litres up to 1,650 litres to accommodate versatile luggage needs.

Powertrain and Electric Range

The e-J7 is available in several powertrain and battery configurations. The version driven by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivers a maximum output of 142 kW (approx. 193 PS) and 340 Nm of peak torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds, with a top speed rated at 150 km/h. In terms of driving range, the primary domestic variant is equipped with a 64.5 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, achieving an NEDC range of up to 530 km. Meanwhile, export models utilise a 50.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, delivering an NEDC-rated range of 402 km and an official Brazil-market rating of 249 km. With DC fast charging, juicing up from 30% to 80% takes as little as 48 minutes.

Chassis and Handling

The chassis setup is one of the e-J7’s standout selling points. It boasts an all-independent suspension setup with front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link layout—a rarity among electric sedans in this price bracket. Thanks to this, the e-J7 effectively soaks up road imperfections during daily commutes while providing ample lateral stability through high-speed corners. The chassis was fine-tuned with the involvement of Volkswagen dynamics specialists. Across the range, the model employs a front-wheel drive (FWD) layout, paired with ventilated front discs, solid rear discs, an electronic parking brake (EPB), and 215/55 R17 tyres.

Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

In terms of safety and smart driving technology, the e-J7 comes generously equipped with both active and passive safety features. Standard active safety equipment across the range includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Traction Control (TC). It is also fitted with full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Blind Spot Detection (BSD), providing dependable driver assistance for both urban commuting and highway cruising. On the passive safety front, Mexican-specification models come standard with six airbags. Furthermore, its direct driver drowsiness and distraction monitoring system elevates its active safety credentials on par with mainstream European rivals.

Market Reception and Performance

The e-J7 (including the domestic iC5 and Sehol E50A nameplates) received a relatively lukewarm response in its home market. However, amidst the global transition towards electrification, the car has started gaining traction overseas. Thanks to its generous cabin space, strong value-for-money proposition, and the engineering backing of the Volkswagen partnership, the model has earned recognition from international fleet buyers. Notably, in 2023, the e-J7 secured a substantial fleet procurement contract with the São Paulo State Police in Brazil for municipal patrol duties. In the UK, its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) derivative also emerged as a popular contender, briefly topping monthly sales charts.

Nevertheless, constrained by limited brand awareness and service network coverage, the e-J7’s global sales volume remains modest overall. In terms of owner reviews, its responsive acceleration and spacious interior have received widespread praise, though a firmer ride quality, occasional interior trim rattles, and intermittent power side mirror glitches are among the more commonly reported issues. Overall, as a flagship electric sedan stemming from the JAC-Volkswagen collaboration, the e-J7 showcases JAC’s engineering capabilities in core mechanical components, safety, and international build standards, although there remains room for growth in brand equity and aftersales support.
