The JAC JS3 is a B-segment SUV under JAC Motors, positioned as a value-for-money urban runabout tailored for younger car buyers. In China, it was marketed under the "Refine S3" nameplate, while global markets adopted the JS3 moniker. The first-generation Refine S3 debuted in 2014, and following several iterations, the third-generation model was introduced in 2016 before the nameplate was eventually discontinued domestically by 2020. Globally, the JS3 returned to Russian showrooms in September 2024, priced at around 1.549 million Rubles to become the most affordable brand-new Chinese SUV in Russia at the time. The 2026 JS3 in Oman is tagged between approximately OMR 5,200 and OMR 6,000 (around RM97,000 to RM112,000).
In terms of exterior dimensions, the Chinese-spec version measures 4345/1765/1640mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 2560mm, a fully laden ground clearance of 155mm, and a minimum turning radius of 5.5m. It is fitted with a 45-litre fuel tank and offers a generous boot capacity of 600 litres.
Design-wise, the JS3 features JAC's signature "bottle mouth" front grille, sporting a bold hexagonal layout flanked by trapezoidal headlamps for a sharp, aggressive front fascia. The profile carries clean character lines matched with a well-contoured rear end. The front fascia was thoroughly revamped for the 2019 facelift, introducing slim LED daytime running lights (DRLs) that flow along the upper edge of the grille to widen visual stance, alongside integrated "European-style" eagle-eye projector headlamps housing both high/low beams and fog lamps. Down the sides, it rides on newly styled five-spoke two-tone alloy wheels featuring cut-out spokes designed for a sportier aesthetic and improved brake cooling.
Inside, the JS3 features an all-black interior accented by silver trim across the dashboard. Higher-spec variants gain leatherette sports seats and a multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel. The cabin focuses heavily on practicality and everyday comfort, offering 60:40 split-folding rear seats to further expand cargo room.
Under the bonnet, the JS3 is driven by a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine (a 1.5-litre unit is offered in selected markets) featuring DOHC and Dual Variable Valve Timing (DVVT), pushing out 88kW (approx. 118 hp) and 150N·m of torque, with peak power arriving at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque available between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm. The domestic Refine S3 previously offered a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine rated at 85kW (116 hp) and 150N·m, compliant with China 6b emissions standards. In Russia, the JS3 is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine putting out around 109 hp.
Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) . The CVT is a second-generation gearbox supplied by Punch Powertrain from Belgium, proven for its reliability. Drive is sent exclusively to the front wheels (front-wheel drive), achieving a top speed of 180km/h. Fuel economy is rated at around 6.5L/100km on the NEDC cycle, while the 2026 Oman-spec model returns 6.1L/100km and completes the 0–100km/h sprint in roughly 11.0 seconds.
Under the skin, the JS3 rides on a setup featuring front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam, a familiar configuration in this segment that balances production costs with daily ride compliance. It comes with Electric Power Steering (EPS), ventilated disc brakes at the front, solid discs at the rear, and a traditional mechanical handbrake. Kerb weight is rated at around 1,275kg.
In terms of suspension tuning, the JS3 is not overly biased towards soft damping, retaining clear road feedback. The long-travel suspension and relatively compliant springs soak up road imperfections effectively. The steering is light and effortless for agile urban driving; while there is slight dead play on-centre, the setup is well-suited for city commuting. Hill-Start Assist (HSA) comes standard across the range to prevent rollback on inclines. Underpinned by JAC's second-generation passenger car platform, the JS3 benefits from enhanced structural rigidity and overall chassis durability.
Inside, the JS3 puts smart connectivity at the forefront. The 2019 update introduced a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display powered by JAC's proprietary "Zhiling 3.0" telematics system with built-in 4G connectivity, preloaded with apps such as AutoNavi Maps, Kuwo Music, Migu Video, and Tingban FM. Voice command capabilities are driven by iFlytek 3.5 automotive voice tech, delivering class-leading recognition accuracy and rapid response times.
For convenience and comfort, higher-end trims boast a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, automatic climate control, and one-touch power windows with anti-pinch functionality on all four doors. The range-topping variant adds a powered tailgate and heated front seats. Audio is piped through either a 4- or 6-speaker sound system depending on the trim level.
Safety remains a core selling point for the JS3. Built around a high-strength cage body structure aligned with European 5-star crash safety concepts, high-strength steel makes up 55% of the body shell, complemented by anti-collision steel beams fitted front, rear, and inside all four doors. Active safety is anchored by Bosch Generation 9.0/9 ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), integrating ABS, EBD, Traction Control (TCS), Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Brake Override System (BOS), and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) into a comprehensive 7-in-1 active safety net. Additionally, the SUV offers a 360-degree surround-view camera and 8 parking sensors front and rear.
In official crash evaluations, the Refine S3 scored 55.4 points to secure a C-NCAP Five-Star Safety Rating, largely credited to its high-strength cage body structure. Component engineering was overseen by global tier-one supplier Magna, ensuring robust vehicle safety through multi-tiered validation.
On the active driver assistance front, the flagship variant is equipped with advanced safety kit such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). Standard cruise control is fitted across all other variants for stress-free highway cruising.
The Refine S3 was once a benchmark model in China's compact SUV segment. Following its debut in August 2014, the first-generation model quickly became a market hit, racking up 221,082 units in 2015 and earning the C-NCAP 2015 "Best Reputation Award". The third-generation model launched in 2016 saw first-month sales exceed 22,000 units, delivering 12,127 units within just 27 days. By 2018, cumulative sales of the Refine S3 had surpassed 500,000 units, establishing it as one of JAC's most defining nameplates. In July 2019, it was among the first batch of certified recommended models by the China Automobile Health Index for its excellent cabin air quality.
As competition intensified in China's domestic SUV arena, sales began to taper off, leading to the model's withdrawal from the Chinese market around 2020. However, the JS3 remains an active contender overseas, continuing to draw buyers in markets like Russia, Ukraine, Oman, and Saudi Arabia thanks to its accessible pricing and generous equipment list. From a market perspective, the JS3 (Refine S3) not only marked a pivotal step forward in JAC's compact SUV offensive, but also provided crucial groundwork for Chinese carmakers venturing into global export markets.
