JAC Yueyue (JAC Yueyue / J2)

2026-09-27 13:20:01

The JAC Yueyue (widely known as the JAC J2 in international export markets) is an A00-segment micro-hatchback introduced by JAC Motors during its early foray into the passenger car segment. Serving as an important early milestone in JAC's passenger vehicle portfolio, the Yueyue carved out a niche in the microcar segment with its ultra-compact footprint, nimble manoeuvrability, and accessible pricing, acting as the brand's entry-level calling card both domestically and abroad.

Model Overview

Positioned as an A-segment micro hatchback (supermini), the JAC Yueyue features a petite body measuring 3,535 mm long, 1,640 mm wide, and 1,475 mm tall, with a 2,390 mm wheelbase. Characterised as a nimble "urban runabout" and an "unfussy entry-level city car", its key selling points include effortless city driving, exceptional ease of parking, and remarkably low running and maintenance costs. The model was engineered to provide young working professionals and urban families with an economical, short-distance daily commuting solution.

Development History

Inception and Market Debut (2010–2015): The Yueyue officially debuted in 2010. As the smallest offering in JAC's passenger car stable, it adopted a friendly, rounded aesthetic that quickly resonated with young, first-time car buyers.

Platform Evolution and Derivatives (2015–2019): In response to more specialised customer demands in the compact segment, JAC introduced several Yueyue derivatives, including uprated powertrain options and sportier styling editions. During this period, the Yueyue also served as an engineering mule for JAC's early electrification and new energy vehicle (NEV) powertrain development.

Brand Restructuring and Discontinuation (2020 to Present): With JAC Motors realigning its strategy towards the "Sehol" marque and dedicated lightweight NEV architectures, the Yueyue completed its production lifecycle and phased out of mainstream showrooms. Today, the engineering expertise gained from its compact chassis architecture serves as the foundation for subsequent all-electric microcars, such as the iEV6E.

Market Performance

During its initial sales run, the Yueyue saw brisk demand in lower-tier cities as well as selected short-haul fleet and commuting sectors thanks to its strong value-for-money proposition. Although evolving domestic market preferences shortened its local lifecycle, the export-spec JAC J2 continues to see active circulation on the used car market and across developing regions, prized for its mechanical durability and affordable, readily available spare parts.

Core Technologies

Powertrain: Early iterations were powered by a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. While output figures were modest, the powertrain's straightforward mechanical design ensured exceptionally low servicing costs, making it an easy and economical car to run.

Chassis and Packaging: Built on a lightweight monocoque chassis tailored for compact city cars, the Yueyue made smart use of interior packaging to ensure adequate front-row comfort while meeting everyday short-trip commuting needs despite its compact exterior dimensions.

Design Philosophy: The Yueyue featured the bold, wide-mouth grille design popular during its era, complemented by smooth, rounded body contours for instant recognition. Its tight turning radius delivered superb agility through congested urban traffic.

Future Plans

Although the Yueyue has officially concluded its production run, its role as an engineering testbed for JAC's compact car technology lives on in the brand's next-generation EV lineup. JAC’s microcar strategy has transitioned entirely to all-electric drivetrains, prioritising improved driving range, rapid DC fast-charging capabilities, and smart digital cockpit experiences to serve urban commuter needs worldwide on modern dedicated EV platforms.
