1. Definition and Characteristics

RV camping is a form of automotive tourism that utilises recreational vehicles (motorhomes or campervans) as mobile accommodation for camping in the wild or at designated campsites, representing the core segment of vehicular camping. Built with fixed sleeping berths, storage compartments, sanitary amenities, as well as integrated lighting and air-conditioning systems, an RV combines transport and lodging into one—giving travellers the freedom of spontaneous road trips alongside a comfortable living experience.

2. RV Types and Selection

RVs are broadly categorised into two main types based on whether they are self-propelled: motorised (motorhomes) and towable (caravans).

Type Sub-category Main Characteristics
Motorised Class A Largest in footprint and most luxurious in amenities, measuring 8–14 metres in length, requiring a heavy vehicle driving licence
Class B Built on an original van body, offering agile handling and ideal for 2–3 occupants
Class C Features an over-cab alcove bed above the cockpit with generous living space, well-suited for families, and commands the largest domestic market share
Towable Conventional Caravan Requires a tow vehicle; spacious and value-for-money, with higher reliance on driving skills and campsite infrastructure
Fifth-Wheel Trailer Coupled via a fifth-wheel hitch mounted in a pickup truck bed, often accommodating a multi-level interior layout

3. Campsite Facilities and Services

Dedicated RV campsites provide essential infrastructure such as water and electrical hook-ups, waste dump stations, public washrooms, shower facilities, fire safety systems, and telecommunications/Wi-Fi. Campsites are thoughtfully zoned into living, entertainment, business, and recreational areas, complete with supporting amenities such as convenience stores, dining outlets, and laundry facilities. Pitch layouts feature back-in, pull-through, and drive-by configurations to cater to various vehicle dimensions. China’s first purpose-built auto camping park was established in 2011 in Fengtai, Beijing, spanning 600 mu across five functional zones, including a dedicated RV experience area.

In terms of campsite fees, daily rates typically range between RM50 and RM200, depending on the available amenities, geographical location, and seasonal demand.

4. Civilised Camping and Safety Regulations

Environmental protection: Uphold the "Leave No Trace" ethos by packing out all personal rubbish before departure; onboard waste holding tanks must be emptied strictly at designated campsite dump stations to prevent soil and water contamination.

Fire safety: Given the complex onboard electrical wiring, fire hazards must not be overlooked. Open flames are strictly prohibited inside the living cabin; periodically inspect internal wiring for wear and ageing; equip the vehicle with a certified fire extinguisher with validated pressure; and avoid overloading onboard electrical appliances.

Public order: Comply with local council regulations and refrain from parking indiscriminately in non-designated zones; keep noise levels down and avoid using external loudspeakers at night; pet owners must strictly adhere to pet management and leashing guidelines.

5. Development Status and Trends

The domestic RV camping sector is still in its nascent stage. As of end-2024, the nationwide RV parc stands at approximately 250,000 to 300,000 units, trailing significantly behind European and North American markets. Nevertheless, growth momentum remains robust: the market value exceeded RM108,490,000,000 in 2024, backed by policy support from 14 government departments, including the Ministry of Commerce.

Policy support: The Ministry of Commerce has rolled out automotive circulation and consumption reform pilot programmes with RV camping highlighted as a priority sector, alongside continuous refinement of national standards such as the "Quality Grade Classification of Self-Drive and RV Campsites".

Consumer trends: The consumer demographic is broadening from retirees to young families aged 28 to 45. Industry case studies indicate that professional campsites are increasingly drawing inter-provincial "migratory" RV travellers, with the average stay duration reaching 9.7 days.
