The Shanghai brand sedan is one of the most representative car brands in the history of China's automotive industry. Affiliated with SAIC Motor Corporation Limited (abbreviated as "SAIC Group"), it shares the era-defining reputation of "North Hongqi, South Shanghai" alongside the Northern Hongqi cars. Produced by the "Shanghai Automobile Manufacturing Factory," the predecessor of SAIC Group, the brand name carries strong regional identity. Over its 33-year production history, the Shanghai brand sedan accumulated a total production of 79,525 units. It was the only domestically produced sedan capable of mass production in mainland China before the Reform and Opening Up, serving as the primary model for official use and state guest reception during that period.
The predecessor of the Shanghai brand sedan can be traced back to 1958. On September 28, 1958, the Shanghai Automobile Assembly Factory successfully developed the first "Phoenix" brand mid-to-high-end sedan. At that time, the Shanghai Automobile Assembly Factory carried out reverse engineering based on a Mercedes-Benz 220S sedan. The chassis adopted a non-frame structure, and most body parts were handmade or machined on ordinary lathes. At that time, dozens of the strongest industrial enterprises in Shanghai City participated in the development, each undertaking the R&D task of a related component, even car door locks were sent to specialized manufacturers for research. Finally, the first sedan prototype was completed in less than a year.
After experiencing the three-year economic difficult period, in 1963, the "Phoenix" brand sedan was renamed "Shanghai Brand SH760 Model" sedan and began mass production. In 1965, the Shanghai brand sedan passed the technical appraisal of the National Machinery Industry Ministry and was approved for standardization. Thereafter, the Shanghai brand sedan entered a ten-year period of rapid development. By 1975, the Shanghai brand sedan had formed an annual production capacity of 5,000 units, surpassing 5,000 units annually for the first time in 1980.
In 1985, the Sino-German joint venture Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. was established, and the joint venture brand Santana sedan began to dominate the Chinese sedan market. Under this impact, the status of the old Shanghai Automobile Factory became nominal. Although SAIC Motor once built another factory to continue producing Shanghai brand sedans and implemented certain technical improvements, it ultimately failed to turn the situation around. On November 25, 1991, the final assembly workshop of the Shanghai Automobile Factory held the last Shanghai brand sedan off-the-line ceremony, and the Shanghai brand sedan completely exited the historical stage.
Although the Shanghai brand sedan was officially discontinued, the brand did not completely die out. In 2007, the Shanghai brand appeared again at the Shanghai Auto Show as an alternative energy concept car. In 2009, SAIC Motor launched Shanghai brand pure electric and fuel cell models. Thereafter, SAIC Motor filed three Shanghai brand sedan models with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology around 2012 (displacements of 2.0L, 2.4L, and 3.0L respectively), planning to position them as high-end government and business vehicles. Around 2014, SAIC Motor internal sources revealed that the Roewe flagship sedan 950 would "rebadge" to the Shanghai brand for launch, engaging in direct competition with FAW Hongqi. This "rebadging" was reflected in the Shanghai brand 950 model, with appearance dimensions almost identical to the Roewe 950 (Length x Width x Height 4,996mm x 1,857mm x 1,505mm, Wheelbase 2,837mm), only the front and rear brand logo were replaced. As of 2026, the full resumption of Shanghai brand vehicles has not been officially confirmed.
The product line of Shanghai brand vehicles has experienced two major development stages: the classic model period and the modern new energy technology model period.
Classic Model Period (1963 - 1991): The Shanghai brand sedan focused on the SH760 series as its main model, creating the first series-based, mass-produced product matrix in the Chinese automotive industry. Among them, the SH760A sedan was equipped with the 680 type inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, power 90 horsepower; the SH760B type switched to a new 682Q type inline six-cylinder engine, power increased to 100 horsepower. Based on this, the Shanghai brand also developed SH770 type armored cars, SH771 type luxury sedans, SH761 type inspection cars and other multiple derivative models, as well as SH762 type, SH763 type and Shanghai brand pickup trucks and other variants, forming the earliest series sedan matrix among domestic brands.
New Energy Technology Period (After 2007): The Shanghai brand brand was combined with new energy concepts multiple times. At the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show and 2021 etc. time nodes, Shanghai brand participated as an alternative energy concept car. The brand catalog also appeared CSA7000FCEV, CSA7001FCEV, CSA7002FCEV and other multiple fuel cell sedan model numbers. In 2012, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (Batch 233) announcement simultaneously appeared Shanghai brand's CSA7200 (2.0L), CSA7240 (2.4L) and CSA7300 (3.0L) three sedan product numbers, highly consistent with Roewe brand vehicle model codes.
The market performance of Shanghai brand vehicles can be divided into two stages: the classic period and the modern period.
Market Performance in the Classic Period: In the 33-year production cycle, the Shanghai brand sedan was long in a situation of strong demand. In 1963, the year of resumption of production, Shanghai brand small batch produced only 50 units; by 1975, it had formed an annual production capacity of 5,000 units, surpassing 5,000 units annually in 1980. Even so, the Shanghai brand sedan was only for receiving foreign guests in various places at that time, and ordinary people found it difficult to buy. After production stopped in 1991, the cumulative total output of the Shanghai brand sedan stopped at 79,525 units.
Market Performance in the Modern Period: From 2009 to around 2014, the market performance of Shanghai brand vehicles showed two-stage fluctuations. The early stage (2009 to around 2012) was mainly scattered concept car appearances and catalog filing, and no large-scale sales were formed. The later stage (around 2014) with the promotion of the Roewe 950 rebadging plan, Shanghai brand 950 was once regarded as an important chip for SAIC Motor to compete with FAW Hongqi in the high-end market. However, the actual landing progress of this rebadged model was relatively limited, and the subsequent brand gradually entered a suspension state. Truly mass-produced models could not be rolled out on a large scale thereafter, and market noise was low.
Shanghai brand vehicles have experienced the technical evolution from fuel engines to fuel cells in the power system field.
Fuel Engine Technology in the Classic Period: Shanghai brand SH760 series early on equipped with 680Q type inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, displacement 2.2 liters, power 90 horsepower. Later SH760B type was equipped with new 682Q type inline six-cylinder gasoline engine, power rose to 100 horsepower. SH771 type used 8-cylinder V-type gasoline engine, power 170 horsepower.
Fuel Cell Technology in the New Energy Period: After entering the 21st century, Shanghai brand brand became an important carrier for SAIC Motor to display hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology. SAIC Motor mounted its independently developed fourth-generation fuel cell on the Shanghai brand concept car based on Roewe 750, adopting 350 bar high-pressure hydrogen storage system, maximum speed can reach over 150 kilometers per hour. Shanghai brand plug-in fuel cell sedan uses power battery as the main power source, can be charged using civilian 220V AC power, small pressurized fuel cell system as auxiliary power.
Shanghai brand vehicles have an early unique history in exports.
In the special period from the 1980s to 1990s of the last century, Shanghai brand sedans were sold to overseas markets through multiple export-like methods such as overseas Chinese gifting cars back home, Sino-foreign joint venture enterprises purchasing, foreign embassies and consulates and foreign business institutions purchasing cars. Entering the 21st century, Shanghai brand vehicles explored technology output overseas through brand rebadging and fuel cell displays. With SAIC Motor continuing to promote localization layout overseas in recent years as the first echelon enterprise in domestic automotive industry exports, Shanghai brand, as an important component within the SAIC autonomous system, its brand system's increasingly rich new energy technology and supporting solutions are also included in the consideration scope of overseas business layout.
Future Strategy
The return path of Shanghai brand vehicles has always been of great concern. From 2007 appearing as a new energy concept car, to 2009 launching pure electric and fuel cell models, to 2012 returning to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology product catalog and 2014 Roewe 950 rebadging plan brewing, SAIC Motor's return plan for Shanghai brand vehicles has appeared multiple times. Future Shanghai brand vehicles are expected to adopt high-spec, high-price strategies, mainly positioning in high-end government and business vehicle markets, and focusing on deep binding with new energy technologies (fully electric, hydrogen fuel, hybrid, etc.). When Shanghai brand vehicles can fully resume production and whether they can successfully stand their ground in the high-end new energy vehicle market will have a significant impact on SAIC Motor's brand layout strategy and the reconstruction of the independent brand system.
