2026-07-07 21:00:57

Skywell is a unicorn enterprise that integrates R&D, production, sales, and services for new energy vehicles and their core components. The company was founded in December 2010 in Nanjing by Mr. Huang Hongsheng, founder of Skyworth Group. It is one of the few companies in the industry to hold full‑category vehicle qualifications, master core three‑electric technology, and pursue a strategy of developing both commercial and passenger vehicles.

Headquartered at the Nanjing Airport High‑tech Industrial Park, its product range covers new energy vehicles from 4 to 18 metres—including buses, logistics vehicles, special‑purpose vehicles, trucks, passenger cars, and autonomous buses. It also has the R&D, design, and production capabilities for core technologies such as three‑electric systems, full‑vehicle integration, smart cockpits, autonomous driving, and solar‑storage‑charging energy solutions.

Skywell Group operates three core brands: SKYWORTH (domestic vehicle brand), SKYWELL (overseas brand), and SKYSOURCE (auto parts brand). Its production bases are spread across seven cities: Nanjing, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Xuzhou, Hohhot, Weinan, and Huainan. The group has been named to the Hurun Global Unicorn List for seven consecutive years, and is the only new energy vehicle manufacturer in Nanjing to make the list.

Development History

Skywell's founding is closely tied to Huang Hongsheng's cross‑industry move. In 2010, he established Skywell Group in Nanjing and began his second entrepreneurial journey. In January 2011, the group acquired and restructured Nanjing King Long Bus Manufacturing Co., Ltd., shifting its focus toward the new energy commercial vehicle sector. After taking control, Skywell Group pivoted Nanjing King Long from traditional mid‑sized buses to new energy vehicles. The company passed the NEV production qualification review in 2012, and from 2014 to 2020 consistently ranked among the top in national pure electric bus sales—second in 2014, second again in 2019, and third in 2020 with 6,232 units sold.

In 2017, Skywell obtained passenger car production qualifications, officially entering the NEV passenger market and establishing a "commercial‑passenger dual‑track" strategy. In November 2019, Skywell Group launched the Tianmei auto brand, releasing its first model, the Tianmei ET5, in 2020. In April 2021, Skyworth Group announced that Tianmei Auto would be renamed Skyworth Auto, with Skywell Group serving as its production and manufacturing entity, forming a brand structure of "made by Skyworth, branded by Skywell."

In 2024, Huang Hongsheng stepped down as Chairman, and the group completed its leadership transition. That same year, Skyworth Auto secured backing from Hong Kong and Singapore capital markets, further refining its passenger‑commercial dual‑line product matrix. In 2025, Huang Hongsheng launched the commercial vehicle technology brand SKYWORTH S+, featuring Level 4 autonomous driving and ultra‑fast charging, and signed an agreement with Shanghai's Fengxian District to build a new energy autonomous logistics vehicle production base. In early 2026, Skywell Group convened its annual commercial vehicle marketing conference, reaffirming its commitment to deepening its presence in the commercial vehicle market.

Market Performance

Skywell has delivered strong results in both commercial and passenger vehicle segments. In the commercial space, its core subsidiary Nanjing King Long has consistently ranked among the top in China's pure electric bus sales—second nationally in 2014, second again in 2019, and third in 2020 with 6,232 units sold. The company has delivered over 80,000 new energy vehicles to more than 200 cities across over 60 countries and regions. Its vehicles are widely used in public transport, group tourism, urban logistics, ports, industrial parks, heavy‑truck engineering, and intelligent driving demonstrations.

In the passenger vehicle space, Skyworth Auto has been growing steadily. In 2022, total annual sales reached 21,916 units, a year‑on‑year increase of 255.72%. In 2023, deliveries came in at around 18,600 units, falling short of expectations. Products have been exported to developed markets including France and Germany. In the second half of 2025, the global model "Skyworth Hongtu," built at Skywell's new Huainan base, started generating orders, with over 500 domestic orders received by January 2026, and production capacity being ramped up. Group overseas business grew rapidly in the first three quarters of 2025, with strong growth in core markets across Europe, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Core Technologies

Skywell's core competitiveness lies in its fully in‑house developed three‑electric system, intelligent platform, and global modular technology. The company has a team of nearly 800 experts, PhDs, and master's‑level engineers, with 1,290 patent applications filed and 804 granted.

Three‑Electric Technology: In 2015, Skywell Group established Nanjing Chuangyuan Tiandi Power Technology Co., Ltd., focused on rechargeable battery packs, BMS, motor controllers, and related systems. The group has the in‑house capability to design and develop BMS algorithms based on fully validated SOC, SOP, SOH, and SOE calculations. On the powertrain front, Skyworth Auto has developed an 800V integrated high‑voltage system and is actively advancing V2G bidirectional charging technology, achieving 120 kW vehicle‑to‑vehicle DC discharge.

Vehicle Architecture and the "Four‑Open" Manufacturing Model: In 2023, Skywell's light commercial division adopted a fully forward‑development approach for the "Skyworth Hongtu" model at its new Huainan base. The team achieved a global first in left‑ and right‑hand drive universalisation, completed 38 patent designs and technical breakthroughs, raised parts commonality across the vehicle to 85%, and saved over 40 million RMB in tooling costs. On the intelligence front, the "Huainan Municipal Key Laboratory for New Energy Vehicles and Intelligent Connected Vehicles," initiated by Skywell, was officially approved and launched in April 2026, focusing on high‑safety, high‑energy‑density battery pack energy management, high‑efficiency central integrated e‑axles, modular intelligent chassis, and multi‑scenario autonomous driving. The group has also collaborated with partners including Huawei, Baidu, and China Telecom to develop "vehicle‑road‑cloud integration" technologies.

Global Presence

Skywell is one of the earliest, deepest, and most broadly globalised new energy vehicle companies, operating on the principle that "going global with the supply chain is not a choice—it's a survival imperative." As of early 2025, its products had entered 68 countries and regions. Skyworth Auto made its first overseas appearance at the Paris Motor Show and received strong recognition from the European market. Skywell Group also launched a forward‑developed large VAN for the European market, which was well received at the Brussels Motor Show, while its autonomous Shuttle Bus drew significant interest from overseas buyers at the 138th Canton Fair.

On the localisation front, Skywell has completed R&D, production, and sales set‑ups in markets such as Indonesia and Kazakhstan, moving beyond product exports to deliver full‑scenario energy solutions. Leveraging its photovoltaic sector strengths, the group works with overseas partners to provide integrated "solar + storage + charging" services, with particular attention to battery thermal management and body insulation in regions with challenging road conditions, and upgraded air‑conditioning and insulation configurations in Middle Eastern markets. In the first three quarters of 2025, the group's overseas business grew rapidly, with project collaborations in green transportation and energy storage systems under the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China‑Africa Cooperation, in partnership with Xiamen C&D and governments including Zimbabwe.

Future Outlook

Skywell's strategic vision is to become a "trillion‑yuan‑level auto enterprise," with a continued focus on deepening synergy between its commercial and passenger vehicle businesses. On the execution front, the group will accelerate production ramp‑up and order delivery for global models like the Skyworth Hongtu. By steadily building out its capabilities in energy storage systems, ultra‑fast charging, and intelligent driving ecosystems, Skywell aims to evolve from a pure‑play NEV manufacturer into a full‑chain provider of green intelligent transportation and comprehensive energy solutions. Leveraging the strong industrial infrastructure at its core bases in Nanjing and Huainan, the group continues to export Chinese smart EV technical standards and proven commercialisation expertise to a broader global stage.
