Vehicle Population

2026-10-29 07:00:05

Vehicle population refers to the cumulative number of registered motor vehicles (excluding motorcycles, tractors, and similar machinery) in a country or region at a specific point in time, typically measured in units. It serves as a key macroeconomic indicator reflecting a nation’s car ownership penetration, consumer spending power, and road transport infrastructure capacity. China has maintained the world’s largest vehicle population for multiple consecutive years, cementing its status as a veritable powerhouse on wheels. As of end-June 2026, China’s total vehicle population reached 371 million units.

Total Volume and Growth Trends

China’s vehicle population has maintained a steady upward trajectory. Annual figures show that the national vehicle population stood at 366 million units at end-2025, with 26.19 million new vehicle registrations recorded across the year. In the first half of 2026 alone, new vehicle registrations nationwide reached 10.51 million units, driving the total vehicle parc up by approximately 5 million units in just six months to an all-time high of 371 million units. Concurrently, the total number of licensed motor vehicle drivers in the country reached 567 million, including 533 million car drivers—a massive driving population that provides a strong demand foundation for sustained vehicle growth.

In terms of urban distribution, vehicle ownership is heavily concentrated in major metropolitan hubs. As of end-June 2026, 105 cities nationwide recorded vehicle populations surpassing 1 million units, with 47 cities exceeding 2 million units and 27 cities topping 3 million units. A total of 9 cities recorded over 5 million units—Chengdu, Chongqing, and Beijing surpassed 6 million units, while Zhengzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Xi'an, Hangzhou, and Wuhan each exceeded 5 million units. Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), noted that while cities with a vehicle population exceeding 5 million units have reached 7, the pace of expansion has noticeably moderated.

New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Population

The growth rate of the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) population has significantly outpaced the broader automotive market. As of end-June 2026, China’s NEV fleet reached 48.97 million units, accounting for 13.19% of the total vehicle population and representing an increase of 5 million units from 43.97 million units at end-2025. Within this total, the population of pure electric vehicles (BEVs) stood at 33.675 million units, representing 68.77% of the total NEV parc.

In the first half of 2026, newly registered NEVs reached 5.195 million units, accounting for 49.42% of total new vehicle registrations—meaning nearly one in every two newly registered cars was an NEV. This figure reflected a further slight increase from 49.38% in 2025, indicating that NEV market penetration among new car registrations has firmly stabilised at the half-market share benchmark.
