- Official Legal Name: Vicinity Motor Corp.
- Founded: 2008 (by William Trainer)
- Global Headquarters: Aldergrove, British Columbia, Canada
- Primary Target Market: Municipal public transit agencies (community shuttles), airport/hotel shuttles, and commercial logistics fleets.
- Core Product Portfolio: Low-floor clean diesel/CNG midibuses, zero-emission electric buses, and Class 3 electric trucks.
Development History
1. Filling the Market Gap (2008–2010)
In 2008, major Canadian transit agencies like BC Transit identified a major operational gap: standard 40-foot transit buses were too large for low-passenger community routes, while traditional cutaway van shuttles lacked durability. When major bus builders refused to create a middle-ground solution, William Trainer founded Grande West Transportation Group. The company designed a 27.5-foot, heavy-duty, low-floor "midibus" named the Vicinity. A prototype debuted at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics to test in extreme climates.
2. Partnership and Rebranding (2011–2021)
To ensure cost-effective production, Grande West partnered with China's Yangzhou Yaxing Motor Coach Company (a subsidiary of Weichai Group) to assemble the vehicles using high-end North American and European components (such as Cummins engines and Allison transmissions). The bus became an overnight success, capturing a massive share of Canada's mid-size bus market. In March 2021, following its strategic pivot toward electrification, the company officially rebranded as Vicinity Motor Corp. (VMC).
3. Financial Restructuring and Asset Sale (2024–2026)
Driven by the aggressive capital demands of the EV transition, VMC faced severe liquidity challenges and was forced into receivership in October 2024 due to unpaid debts. Following insolvency proceedings, its assets were formally acquired by Raeda Dynamics, which now manages the legacy of the prominent Canadian brand.
Core Products & Engineering Characteristics
1. The Vicinity Classic (Midibus Lineup)
The signature product that defined the company is its line of 28-foot to 35-foot heavy-duty transit buses. Available in clean diesel, CNG, and 100% electric variants, these buses are highly praised for bringing the high durability, low-floor accessibility, and dual-door layout of a standard city bus into a compact, fuel-efficient form factor.
2. VMC 1200 Electric Truck
Expanding beyond public transit, VMC developed the VMC 1200, a Class 3 fully electric commercial truck designed for urban last-mile delivery and industrial logistics. It quickly gained traction in the Canadian market, capturing massive corporate backlogs due to its zero-emission profile and versatile chassis-cab layout.
3. The "Global Hybrid" Supply Chain
VMC pioneered a unique engineering philosophy: designing vehicles in Canada to meet rigid North American safety standards, utilizing localized premium powertrains (like Cummins or premium EV battery packs), and leveraging overseas manufacturing partnerships for structural assembly. This allowed municipal transit authorities to deploy highly advanced fleets at a fraction of the cost of legacy domestic builders.
