The Volvo EC40 is an all-electric crossover SUV from Volvo Cars, positioned between a conventional SUV and a coupe. The EC40 is effectively the rebranded version of the former C40 Recharge. In February 2024, Volvo announced a streamlined naming strategy for its fully electric vehicle lineup, dropping the "Recharge" moniker and officially renaming the C40 Recharge to the EC40. The 2025 EC40 has gone on sale in markets such as Taiwan, offering two variants: the Plus Single Motor and the Ultra Twin Motor, priced at NT$2,010,000 and NT$2,320,000 respectively. As the sole all-electric crossover in Volvo's lineup, the EC40 is clearly differentiated from the more conventionally styled EX40 SUV.

Design Language
While staying true to Volvo's Scandinavian design philosophy, the EC40 embraces a more distinctive fastback coupe-SUV silhouette. Up front, it features a closed-off aerodynamic shield grille that, unlike the EX40, eliminates the outer frame for a cleaner, more seamless appearance. The signature "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights remain a standout feature, now showcasing a more integrated lighting graphic. The front bumper has also been reprofiled to accentuate the crossover's sporty stance. The roofline sweeps cleanly towards the rear to form a sleek fastback profile. An integrated ducktail spoiler is positioned below the rear windscreen to further enhance aerodynamic efficiency. In terms of dimensions, the China-spec model measures 4,440 mm long, 1,863 mm wide, and 1,596 mm tall, with a 2,702 mm wheelbase and a kerb weight of 1,996 kg. The 2025 model year introduces a new "Cloud Blue" exterior paint option; the 2026 model year further adds "Sand Dune" metallic paint, inspired by the sand dunes along Sweden's western coastline. Inside, the EC40 upholds Volvo's sustainability ethos by offering a 100% leather-free cabin, with seats trimmed in Charcoal Connect suede-like textile and Microtech upholstery. The interior decor panels have been upgraded to the "Cutting Edge" trim, giving the dashboard and door cards a more contemporary visual appeal.
Powertrain and Performance
The EC40 is available in both single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and twin-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setups. The single-motor variant is powered by Volvo's in-house-developed second-generation rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering 175 kW (238 PS) and 420 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h century sprint in 7.3 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h. The twin-motor AWD variant pairs a front asynchronous induction motor with a rear second-generation permanent magnet synchronous motor, outputting 110 kW at the front axle and 190 kW at the rear axle for a combined output of 300 kW (408 PS) and 670 Nm (68.3 kg-m). The 0-100 km/h sprint is dispatched in just 4.7 seconds, with top speed similarly capped at 180 km/h. In selected overseas markets, twin-motor models can be optioned with a performance software upgrade that adds 34 PS for a total output of 442 PS. Range-wise, the twin-motor model is equipped with an 82 kWh battery pack, delivering up to 669 km of range on the NEDC cycle; under WLTP test standards, the estimated range sits between 573 km and 669 km. The single-motor 70 kWh variant offers a WLTP-rated range of 488 km. In terms of charging, the entire range supports 200 kW DC fast charging, taking approximately 26 to 28 minutes to juice up from 10% to 80%.
Chassis and Handling
The EC40 is built on the CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform jointly developed by Volvo and Geely. Under the skin, the suspension utilizes a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent setup. For drivetrain layout, the single-motor version features a rear-mounted, rear-wheel drive configuration, while the twin-motor version is equipped with an intelligent electric all-wheel drive system. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system, paired with ventilated disc brakes across all four wheels. Drivers can toggle between multiple drive modes to suit varying road conditions and driving preferences. Thanks to a low centre of gravity courtesy of the underfloor battery placement and a well-balanced front-to-rear weight distribution, the EC40 strikes an impressive balance between dynamic handling and everyday ride comfort.
Cabin and Equipment
The EC40's cockpit adopts a clean, driver-centric layout. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch central infotainment touchscreen come standard across the range. The infotainment unit runs Volvo's next-generation user interface shared with the EX30, which refines the menu structure so drivers can access key functions with fewer taps. Powered by built-in Google Android Automotive OS, the system comes natively integrated with Google Maps navigation, the Google Play Store, and Google Assistant voice control. For audio, the range-topping Ultra variant comes standard with a premium Harman Kardon multimedia sound system. Cabin amenities include a fixed panoramic glass roof, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and high-level ambient interior lighting. On the seating front, leather-free sports seats are available, reflecting the brand's green and sustainable vision. The 2025 model year also introduces the Black Edition for the first time, boasting an all-black exterior and interior aesthetic complemented by 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels and a black exterior styling package.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety is central to Volvo's DNA. The EC40 comes fully equipped with the comprehensive Safe Space Technology suite shared with the brand's flagship models. In terms of passive safety, the vehicle features a reinforced high-strength safety cage construction engineered to maximize occupant protection and road-user safety. On the active safety front, the latest collision avoidance systems and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are fitted as standard across all variants. The high-spec Ultra variant adds a 360-degree surround-view camera (featuring a 180-degree front view assist) and Pixel Technology adaptive pixel LED headlights. Its ADAS suite includes Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features such as full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).
Market Performance and Reception
The EC40 (and its predecessor, the C40 Recharge) has delivered solid sales momentum in global markets. In 2023, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge achieved an impressive 145% year-on-year sales growth in Taiwan. The EC40 was also widely recognized at the News UK Motor Awards 2024. In the Chinese market, the predecessor C40 EV was priced between RM292,000 and RM342,000; official pricing for the 2025 EC40 in mainland China has not yet been announced. For the 2026 model year in Taiwan, the EC40 is priced at NT$1,790,000 for the Plus Single Motor variant and NT$1,990,000 for the Ultra Twin Motor variant. As the only crossover coupe in Volvo's all-electric family, the EC40 sets itself apart from the EX40 with its distinct fastback styling. Aligned with Volvo's roadmap towards full electrification by 2030, the EC40 joins the EX30, EX40, EX90, and EM90 to form the brand's comprehensive EV portfolio.
