Volvo XC40

2026-10-19 12:10:02

The Volvo XC40 is a compact luxury SUV from Volvo Cars, targeted at the urban premium SUV segment. It is the first model built on Volvo's CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform. In the Chinese market, it is manufactured and marketed by Volvo Asia Pacific. On 10 June 2026, the 2026 XC40 officially went on sale with a lineup of five variants. As an annual model-year update, the 2026 XC40 comes standard with a 2.0T four-cylinder engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system across the range, positioned as a compact SUV. Official retail pricing ranges from RM269,800 to RM354,800, comprising the following variants: B3 Zhixing Fashion Edition (RM269,800), B3 Zhiyuan Luxury Edition (RM286,800), B4 AWD Zhiyuan Luxury Edition (RM318,800), B4 AWD Zhiyuan Dark Night Edition (RM320,800), and B4 AWD Zhiya Sport Edition (RM354,800). Primary rivals include the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Cadillac XT4.

Design Language

The 2026 XC40 retains Volvo's signature Scandinavian design aesthetic. Up front, it sports a polygonal radiator grille housing the Volvo iron mark, flanked by instantly recognisable signature "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights. The side profile features taut, chiselled character lines paired with a gently sloping roofline. At the rear, prominent horizontal styling cues are complemented by Volvo's iconic "Viking Axe" LED tail lamps. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,440 mm in length, 1,863 mm in width, and 1,657 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,702 mm. Alloy wheel options are available in 18-inch, 19-inch, and 20-inch sizes. Inside, the XC40 adopts a minimalist cabin philosophy, equipped as standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment display, paired with an electronic gear selector. The cabin features extensive soft-touch materials, with the base trim fitted with fabric seats, while higher variants gain synthetic leather or a combination of genuine leather and suede-like nubuck. Range-topping trims feature an Orrefors crystal gear shifter.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 XC40 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine integrated with a 48V mild-hybrid system across the range. The 48V setup assists the engine under acceleration and cruising while capturing energy via regenerative braking to recharge the battery. Two states of tune are available—B3 and B4: the B3 version produces a maximum output of 120 kW (approx. 163 PS) and 265 Nm of torque; the B4 version delivers 145 kW (approx. 197 PS) and 300 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted through a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) as standard. On the WLTC combined test cycle, fuel consumption is rated at 6.67 L/100 km for the B3 and 7.05 L/100 km for the B4. The B4 variant completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.6 seconds.

Chassis and Handling

The XC40 is engineered on the CMA modular platform co-developed by Volvo and Geely. Drivetrain configurations include front-wheel drive (FWD) for the B3 variant and all-wheel drive (AWD) for the B4 variant. The suspension setup employs front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent layout. Drive mode selection comes standard across the lineup. Higher-spec AWD variants deliver superior traction and driving stability in challenging road conditions. The steering system utilises electric power steering (EPS), while braking is handled by disc brakes front and rear.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside the cabin, the 2026 XC40 comes standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment head unit. Powered by native Google Android OS, the system incorporates AutoNavi navigation and Huawei AppGallery, offering a sleek interface with straightforward menu navigation; Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity is also supported. Standard comfort and convenience kit across the range includes an opening panoramic sunroof, remote engine start, driver's seat memory, an auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror, rain-sensing wipers, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Upper variants add a wireless smartphone charging pad, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, an AQI real-time air quality monitoring system, dual-zone climate control with an ioniser, and auto-dimming exterior mirrors. Volvo's CLEANZONE clean cabin system is standard across all variants.

Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance

Safety is central to the Volvo brand identity. The XC40 is equipped with the City Safety active safety suite, providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The system detects other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals, functioning reliably even in low-light conditions. It issues warnings when a collision is imminent and automatically triggers emergency braking to prevent or mitigate an impact if the driver fails to respond in time. Driver assistance features include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Centring Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Information System with Steer Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Road Sign Information. On the passive safety front, the XC40 comes with front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and the Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) for front occupants. Additional safety equipment includes Driver Alert Control, Roll Stability Control (RSC), Hill Start Assist, and Hill Descent Control.

Market Performance and Reception

The XC40 has garnered widespread acclaim since its global unveiling in 2017. In March 2018, the XC40 bagged the prestigious "2018 European Car of the Year" award at the Geneva Motor Show. The accolade was awarded by a jury of 60 automotive journalists representing 23 European countries, evaluated across design, innovation, safety, and value for money. The XC40 topped the rankings with 325 points, establishing a commanding lead over the other six finalists. Nonetheless, the model has faced market headwinds in China in recent years. Sales data reveals that the XC40 recorded cumulative sales of around 1,508 units from January to September 2025; in May 2025 alone, monthly sales dipped to just 142 units, reflecting prolonged low volume and a continuing downward trend. Market analysts point out that the XC40 enjoys no price advantage over its platform-sharing stablemate, the Lynk & Co 01, while facing stiff competition from established German luxury rivals. Still, as the entry-level SUV alongside the larger XC60 and XC90, the XC40 completes Volvo's comprehensive SUV lineup, serving as an integral cornerstone in the marque's modern lineup.
