Model Overview

The Wuling Hongguang MINI EV is an all-electric micro runabout introduced by SAIC-GM-Wuling in July 2020. Powered by an ultra-competitive starting price of RM28,800, it instantly electrified China's new energy commuter market and became the world's best-selling micro EV. Guided by the brand ethos of "Wuling builds whatever the people need" and built around its core DNA of being "stylish, easy to drive, easy to park, and economical", the car pioneered the brand-new A00-segment pure electric commuter category, with monthly deliveries once surpassing 60,000 units to become a genuine market phenomenon.
As of end-2025, cumulative sales of the Hongguang MINIEV family have crossed the 1.9-million-unit mark, topping the A00-segment new energy vehicle sales charts for 65 consecutive months and firmly holding the global crown for cumulative micro EV sales. The lineup now encompasses a comprehensive portfolio spanning the Standard Edition, Macaron Edition, GAMEBOY Edition, Cabrio Edition, and 4-Door Long Range Edition. Total sales reached 436,000 units in 2025, marking a sharp year-on-year rebound of approximately 66.8%. In March 2026, the fifth-generation Hongguang MINIEV officially hit the market, offering four variants across two CLTC range options of 205 km and 301 km, with official recommended retail prices ranging from RM44,800 to RM54,800, starting from just RM42,800 after trade-in incentives.
Design Language
The exterior styling of the Hongguang MINI EV family has progressed through distinct stages, transitioning from "pure utilitarian simplicity" to "fun, trendy, and lifestyle-oriented". Early iterations featured a compact, upright "boxy kei-car" profile designed to maximise cabin space within modest dimensions. The 2021 Macaron Edition introduced two-tone colour schemes and playful vibrant accents, while the subsequent GAMEBOY Edition went further with vertical lighting signatures, a sporty aero body kit, and dual-tone bodywork to accentuate its bespoke character. In 2022, the Cabrio Edition brought a soft-top fabric roof and frameless doors, bagging the title of the world's most accessible convertible at the time with a price tag of RM99,900.
The fifth-generation Hongguang MINIEV debuts the all-new "Sweet Sugar Cube" design philosophy, blending softer curves and approachable cues with its iconic upright silhouette. Up front, it features a "smiling face" front fascia paired with "sunflower dimple" garnishes and playful circular halo LED headlamps, available in three retro exterior shades: Breezy Green, Fluffy White, and Cute Grey. In terms of dimensions, the fifth-gen model measures 3,268 × 1,520 × 1,575 mm (L × W × H) with a 2,190 mm wheelbase. The cabin embraces a "Caramel Cream" two-tone theme, complete with a dedicated display shelf on the front passenger dashboard for showcasing miniature figurines and collectibles. Higher-spec variants gain a 7-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 10.1-inch floating central touchscreen, and pioneer a segment-first column-mounted electronic gear selector, replacing the traditional rotary shift dial.
Powertrain and Performance
The Hongguang MINIEV lineup is driven by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor powering the rear wheels (RWD)—a distinctive drivetrain configuration among micro EVs. Early Standard and Macaron editions utilised a 20 kW (approx. 27 PS) motor delivering an NEDC range of 120 km or 170 km; the GAMEBOY and Cabrio editions were uprated to 30 kW (approx. 41 PS) and 110 Nm of torque, offering a CLTC range between 200 km and 300 km. The fifth-generation model steps up to an all-new 3-in-1 electric drive module, retaining the 30 kW output, sprinting from 0 to 50 km/h in just 4.56 seconds with a top speed of 100 km/h. Juicing the motor is Wuling's in-house developed "Shenlian" lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, with capacities spanning 16.2 kWh to 26.5 kWh. The fifth-gen model is available in 205 km and 301 km CLTC range variants, with the 301 km version packing a 25.1 kWh battery. On the charging front, the entire range supports DC fast charging, AC slow charging, and portable domestic plug charging: DC fast charging juices the battery from 30% to 80% in 35 minutes; AC slow charging takes 4.8 hours for a full charge, while a standard 220V household 3-pin socket allows on-the-go charging. Energy consumption is rated at an efficient 8.9 kWh/100 km, translating to a running cost of just RM0.05 to RM0.06 per kilometre.
Chassis and Handling
Underneath, the chassis employs a front MacPherson strut independent suspension paired with a rear three-link semi-independent setup, while the standard rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout provides balanced front-to-rear axle weight distribution. The suspension tuning leans towards comfort, absorbing minor road bumps on urban tarmac effectively without noticeable looseness over speed humps. The steering is electrically assisted (EPS) and responsive; with a turning radius of just 4.5 metres, the car delivers exceptional agility through tight alleys and congested housing estates, requiring merely half a standard parking bay for parallel parking. Driving modes include Eco, Standard, and Sport, paired with three selectable levels of regenerative braking. Braking duties are handled by front discs and rear drums, with higher-spec trims benefiting from Auto Brake Hold. Due to the inherent characteristics of the rear non-independent suspension, rear-seat comfort over rough or rutted surfaces remains modest, and high-speed stability is somewhat constrained by the narrow tyre width; nonetheless, as an urban city runabout, its chassis dynamics fully meet the expectations of daily commuting.
Cabin and Features
In terms of cabin tech, the fifth-generation Hongguang MINIEV takes a significant leap from "bare essentials" to "class-leading". The range-topping Zhenxiang Edition comes standard with a 10.1-inch high-definition central touchscreen running a playful new UI, integrating climate controls and four preset scene modes—Rest, Camping, Pet, and Rain/Snow—with Apple CarPlay, HUAWEI HiCar, and CarLink connectivity set to be rolled out via upcoming OTA updates. A 7-inch digital instrument cluster is standard across the board, and the column-mounted shifter paired with an electronic parking brake enables a seamless "keyless go" experience—stepping on the brake pedal automatically wakes the system, allowing drivers to shift into gear and drive off instantly. The companion mobile app offers telematics functions such as remote door unlocking, scheduled air-conditioning pre-cooling, vehicle locator, and real-time vehicle health monitoring. The seats are trimmed in a brown-and-white houndstooth-style fabric, with the front backrests reclining up to 164° to create a couch-like lounge setup. The rear seating hip-point has been notably raised, allowing an adult measuring 180 cm to sit with decent ease. The cabin features 20 practical cubby spaces throughout, with a standard boot capacity of 170 litres that expands to 838 litres with the rear seats folded flat, easily swallowing bulky items such as baby strollers and camping gear.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The Hongguang MINIEV is constructed with a ring-shaped safety cage structure, utilising 67% high-strength steel with ultra-high-strength steel rated up to 1,500 MPa applied to critical load-bearing areas, significantly bolstering crash protection. On the passive safety front, the fifth-generation model gets dual front airbags (driver and front passenger) as standard, an upgrade previously standardised on the 4-door and Long Range variants from 2025 onwards. For active safety, top-spec variants feature a segment-exclusive Electronic Stability Control (ESC) suite encompassing 12 subsystems, including ABS, Traction Control (TCS), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), and Hill Hold Control (HHC), actively correcting vehicle attitude on slopes, bends, and slippery surfaces. Parking assistance includes a reverse camera and rear parking sensors fitted as standard across the range, with select variants utilising an 8-inch central screen for visual guidance. In battery safety, Wuling's proprietary Shenlian Battery incorporates a MUST multifunctional integrated architecture and stringent PPB-grade (parts-per-billion defect rate) quality standards; the pack is housed in a 6-series aluminium extrusion casing with a 12 mm impact-absorbing buffer between the casing and cells, safeguarding the battery cells from all six sides. To date, across 2 million cumulative new energy vehicle deliveries, Wuling has maintained a clean record of zero spontaneous battery combustion incidents in traffic accidents.
Market Performance and Verdict
The Wuling Hongguang MINI EV is a landmark model in the history of China's new energy automotive boom. Since its arrival in 2020, its accessible price point and precise target market positioning propelled A00-segment electric runabouts from a niche segment into mainstream motoring within months, once recording a single-month sales peak of 61,500 units. In 2025, the Hongguang MINIEV family chalked up full-year sales of 436,000 units, a 66.8% increase over 2024, pushing its cumulative tally beyond 1.85 million units to retain its number-one spot in A00-segment NEV sales for 65 straight months and solidify its position as the world's cumulative top-selling micro EV. In China, one out of every two micro commuter cars sold was a Hongguang MINIEV. However, following the 50% purchase tax policy adjustment in early 2026 (which added roughly RM2,500 in costs for an RM50,000 model compared to 2025), the micro EV segment faced a sharp downturn, with Hongguang MINIEV deliveries dipping to 7,133 units in January—a 76% month-on-month drop. Against this backdrop, the debut of the fifth-generation model shoulders high expectations to reverse the sales slide.
All in all, backed by an unmatched value proposition, continuous product evolution, and a global sales tally exceeding 1.9 million units, the Hongguang MINI EV has fundamentally reshaped the micro EV landscape both in China and worldwide. Beyond acting as a "people's runabout" that accelerated EV adoption across lower-tier cities and rural townships, it fostered a vibrant urban micro-mobility culture through innovative lifestyle marketing. As SAIC-GM-Wuling crossed the one-million annual NEV sales mark for the first time in 2025 with an NEV market penetration of 61%, the Hongguang MINI EV's role as the primary growth engine cannot be overstated. From the debut of the original car to the present day, the evolution of the Hongguang MINIEV clearly demonstrates that when a micro EV genuinely caters to real-world urban commuting and lowers the barrier to ownership, it will continually sustain strong market vitality in a highly competitive arena.
