XPENG G3 / G3i

2026-10-05 16:50:01

The XPENG G3 is the debut mass-production model from XPENG, officially launched in late 2018. Serving as a crucial milestone that took XPENG from "slide-deck concept" to full-scale mass production, the G3 established the brand's core pillars of "technology, intelligence, and pure electric mobility" during the formative years of China's new energy vehicle (NEV) boom. Following product line renewal and brand strategy upgrades, the model was officially discontinued in late 2023, having fulfilled its historical mission as a pioneering trailblazer.

Model Overview

Positioned as a compact pure electric SUV, the XPENG G3 measures approximately 4,450 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,625 mm. Renowned as "XPENG's foundational model" and an "early benchmark for smart electric SUVs", its standout features include:

Panoramic Windscreen: The signature panoramic glass roof-windscreen combination is the G3's most recognisable design element, bathing the cabin in natural light while providing an expansive forward view.

Pioneering Smart Tech: As an early champion of the "Software-Defined Vehicle" concept, it came equipped with the XPILOT advanced driver-assistance system and Xmart OS infotainment suite, leading the smart cockpit trend among electric SUVs at the time.

Lineup Evolution (G3i): The mid-lifecycle facelift "G3i", rolled out in 2021, adopted the brand's contemporary "X Robot Face" design language alongside refined in-cabin appointments and enhanced smart features.

Development History

Brand Inception (2018–2020): In December 2018, the XPENG G3 officially commenced customer deliveries, demonstrating the industrialisation and manufacturing capability of new-generation EV startups. The G3 quickly became XPENG's key volume seller, establishing a firm market foothold amidst fierce industry competition.

Iterative Evolution (2021–2022): The introduction of the facelifted G3i brought a cohesive family look aligned with the P7 sedan, underpinned by regular Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates that continuously improved intelligent voice interaction and driving assistance features.

Retirement and Legacy (2023 to Present): As XPENG transitioned fully to its Smart Electric Platform Architecture (SEPA), its product portfolio shifted toward more upscale, technologically sophisticated models such as the G6, G9, and X9. In late 2023, XPENG officially announced the discontinuation of the G3 series, reallocating assembly line resources to its latest high-performance lineup.

Market Position and Impact

Historical Significance: The XPENG G3 stands as one of the few models from emerging EV brands to achieve large-scale commercial delivery and widespread market recognition early on. It validated XPENG's full-stack in-house R&D capabilities and yielded invaluable engineering data and customer insights that supported the brand's subsequent global expansion.

Active Car Parc: Although no longer in production, the XPENG G3 retains an active presence on roads. Backed by the brand's official commitment, XPENG continues to provide existing G3 and G3i owners with up to 10 years of after-sales servicing, spare parts availability, and OTA software support.

Market Transition: The G3's original market segment has since been taken over by next-generation models like the XPENG G6, which brings generational leaps in 800V high-voltage architecture, SEPA underpinnings, and advanced autonomous driving tech.

Core Technology Legacy

Intelligent Evolution: The continuous-dialogue voice assistant and automated parking features pioneered on the XPENG G3 have matured into the standard "all-scenario smart voice" and "all-scenario auto-parking" suites fitted across the entire 2026 XPENG range.

Engineering Spillover: The real-world experience gained from the G3 in EV battery-motor-control thermal management and crash safety architecture has been deeply integrated into XPENG's current "SEPA" platform.

Future Strategy

As of 2026, XPENG has embarked on a new decade guided by its "Physical AI + Globalisation" strategy. While the G3 has reached the end of its lifecycle, its smart cabin DNA remains deeply woven into every current production model. Looking ahead, XPENG is committed to commercialising advanced autonomous driving, flying car technology, and robotics, fulfilling its long-term vision as an explorer of future mobility.
