All-New BYD Sealion 5 Launched: Over 2,000km Range with 5th-Gen DM Tech, Starts from RM65k

BYD has officially launched the all-new Sealion 5 in the Chinese market. As the latest compact SUV in the Ocean Series, the vehicle combines striking aesthetics with the advanced fifth-generation DM plug-in hybrid technology. This latest evolution delivers a comprehensive range of over 2,000 km.

The Sealion 5 is available in multiple variants, with official prices in China ranging from RMB 97,900 to RMB 145,900. At current exchange rates, the starting price translates to approximately RM64,500.

Exterior & Space: Sporty Evolution with Long Wheelbase

The Sealion 5 evolves the signature "Ocean Aesthetics" design language with sharper and more dynamic details, delivering a distinctly sportier appearance.

Front Design: The refined front bumper, paired with an Active Grille Shutter (AGS), creates a more aggressive stance while enhancing engine cooling and aerodynamic efficiency.

Smart Technology: Higher-spec variants can be equipped with LiDAR, enabling the advanced "God's Eye" intelligent driving assistance system (DiPilot 300) for superior safety and autonomous capabilities.

Dimensions: The vehicle measures 4,620mm / 1,860mm / 1,630mm (L/W/H) with a wheelbase of 2,770mm. Despite its compact SUV classification, the generous wheelbase rivals many mid-size SUVs, promising a spacious and comfortable cabin.

Interior & Technology: DiLink 150 Cockpit & DiSus-C

The cabin stays true to BYD's family design DNA while incorporating several meaningful upgrades.

Rotating Central Display: At the heart of the interior is the new DiLink 150 intelligent cockpit system, featuring BYD's 15.6-inch adaptive rotating central touchscreen for intuitive operation and a premium user experience.

Comfort & Practicality: The centre console offers a clean, ergonomic layout with a wireless smartphone charging pad and dual cup holders.

Advanced Chassis Technology: The Sealion 5 introduces the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System, which significantly improves cornering stability and vibration suppression. It is also equipped with a high-speed tyre blowout stability control system for enhanced safety.

Powertrain: Exceptional Fuel Efficiency

The Sealion 5 is available in both pure electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (DM-i) variants.

DM-i Hybrid (Highly Promising for Malaysia):

Powered by BYD's fifth-generation DM technology, the hybrid system achieves an outstanding fuel consumption of just 3.1 L/100km (NEDC). With a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery, the comprehensive range reaches an impressive 2,105 km — enough for multiple round trips between KL and Hatyai without refuelling. In pure electric mode, it offers a CLTC range of up to 305 km.

EV Version: 

The pure electric model is available with 200 kW and 240 kW electric motor options. Both are equipped with BYD's second-generation Blade Battery and support flash-charging technology, delivering a CLTC range of up to 630 km.

Currently, BYD Malaysia's lineup (under BYD SD Motors Malaysia) positions the Atto 3 as the entry-level SUV, while the Sealion 7 occupies the premium segment. The new Sealion 5 fits perfectly in the gap between them.

Its class-leading fuel economy of just 3.1 L/100km would be a "killer feature" in Malaysia, especially as the government continues to rationalise fuel subsidies. If launched locally as a CKD model priced between RM120,000 and RM140,000, the Sealion 5 could pose a serious challenge to the Proton X70 and the Proton e.MAS 7.
