Currently, in the Malaysian electric vehicle (EV) market, BYD leads Tesla with a significant advantage. According to the latest data for 2025, BYD holds a 39.33% market share with approximately 8,570 cumulative sales, while Tesla's market share stands at 23.58%. For specific model performance, BYD's three models-the SEAL, Atto 3, and Dolphin-have long ranked among the top five in sales. Among them, the SEAL tops the list with 1,764 registered units, followed closely by Tesla's Model Y (1,747 units) and Model 3 (1,326 units). In the manufacturer rankings for January-February 2025, BYD remained in first place with 1,139 registered units, while Tesla ranked third with 456 units. This gap mainly stems from BYD's more comprehensive product line layout, covering multi-price range models from compact SUVs (Atto 3) to sports sedans (SEAL). Additionally, BYD benefits from its localized production strategy and the Malaysian government's tax relief policies for new energy vehicles, such as exemptions from import duties and sales taxes. Looking ahead, as the government plans to build 10,000 public charging points by 2025, the market penetration of both brands is expected to further increase.
