As F1 returns to Sepang, Malaysia this year, here's what the Proton Saga Cross could look like as an R3 Safety Car

Formula 1 is set to return to Malaysian soil for the first time since 2017 with the 2026 Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which will be held at the Sepang International Circuit.

With F1 finally back after a nine-year absence, we decided to imagine what a Malaysian Safety Car could look like if Proton joined the action.

Using AI-generated images, we've reimagined the upcoming Proton Saga Cross as an R3 Safety Car, complete with a motorsport-inspired bodykit, roof-mounted warning lights and a livery based on Formula 1's current official Safety Cars.

The concept is based on the camouflaged Saga Cross prototypes that have been spotted testing on Malaysian roads in recent months.

Although heavily disguised, the prototypes reveal a compact crossover with a more upright stance than the Saga sedan, featuring a raised ride height, SUV-inspired proportions and a completely redesigned rear end with slim LED taillights stretching across the tailgate.

Based on what has been reported previously, the Saga Cross is expected to become Proton's most affordable SUV, positioned below the X50 and aimed at rivals such as the Perodua Ativa and Honda WR-V.

Powertrain details have yet to be officially confirmed, although speculation points towards Proton's new FutureHEV hybrid system eventually making its way into the model lineup. Proton has already previewed its FutureHEV technology at KLIMS this year, making the Saga Cross one of the potential candidates for hybridisation in the future.
