2026 Honda Civic updated; Prelude-style S+ shift and new steering wheel for Japan-spec hatchback

The 2026 Honda Civic has been updated in Japan, coming with a few choice touches adopted from the soon-to-be-launched-in-Malaysia Prelude.

In Japan, the Civic now gains S+ Shift technology, a novel feature that recently made its debut on the Prelude. This drivetrain software simulates an eight-speed gearbox, allowing drivers to manually control gear changes despite the car relying on an electric motor and a single-speed transmission.

Instead of just fluctuating engine revs to mirror throttle position, the new system introduces distinct, stepped "shifts" that drivers can operate using steering wheel paddle shifters.

Beyond the software integration, the mechanical output remains unchanged. The primary electric motor develops 184 PS and 315 Nm of torque, supported by a 141 PS/182 Nm petrol engine that acts primarily as a generator, bringing the total combined system output to 203 PS.

Aesthetically and structurally, the e:HEV RS adopts a sportier suspension calibration engineered to deliver more direct steering feedback and sharper handling characteristics. The exterior is updated with 18-inch matte black alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin receives part-leather upholstery, red highlights across the air conditioning vents, and a new D-shaped, flat-bottomed steering wheel also lifted from the Prelude parts bin.

No word on this update so far for Malaysia, but it's with good reason - Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. is busy with their next launch, the Prelude, very very soon.

To recap, prices for the Civic range in Malaysia are as follows:

• Civic 1.5 E: RM 133,900

• Civic 1.5 V: RM 144,900

• Civic 1.5 RS: RM 149,900

• Civic 2.0 RS e:HEV: RM 167,900.00
