The end of an era: Johor now enters "J xxxx J" era

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has begun issuing a new plate format for Johor-registered vehicles, with the letter "J" bookending the registration — for example, J xxxx J — after the state's JYY series ran its course. What makes this notable is that, unlike similar-looking formats in the past, the new Johor plates are not a special or auction-only series. They are simply the next block in JPJ's ordinary running number sequence.

Historically, symmetrical or "sandwich" lettering formats like this were reserved strictly for premium, limited-edition special series. Notable historical examples include:

• A xxxx A: A special commemorative series issued for Putrajaya
• P xxxx P: A highly sought-after special release for Penang
• M xxxx M: Special plate issued for Melaka

Because these plates are now the active, default running series, vehicle owners registering their cars in Johor can obtain a "J xxxx J" plate through standard registration channels or the JPJeBid system as the sequence progresses.
