Proton Saga Cross (AMA 02) spotted across Malaysia as compact crossover body and HEV powertrain details emerge

Fresh spy images of the AMA02 Proton Saga Cross have been circulating on Malaysian social media, offering the clearest look yet at Proton’s next small crossover-style model as it continues road testing in the country.

The latest photos, shared across various WhatsApp groups and Threads accounts, show a heavily camouflaged prototype that is still hiding most of its exterior details. Even so, the unit’s overall proportions now appear more settled, and the model looks closer to a compact hatchback with crossover-inspired styling than a full-size SUV.

That visual impression matters because earlier speculation had placed the car closer to rivals such as the Perodua Ativa, Chery Tiggo Cross and Honda WR-V in terms of design direction. Based on these images, the Saga Cross seems to lean more toward compact footprint and long-roof practicality rather than an upright mini-SUV stance.

The prototype also appears to ride on relatively small wheels, believed to be 16 inches in size. The wheel choice makes the body look slightly longer and more stretched, although the heavy camouflage still makes it difficult to judge the final production design with certainty.

According to earlier reporting, the Saga Cross (AMA 02) is expected to replace the discontinued Iriz, placing it in a key role within Proton’s future product line-up. The model is based on the brand’s Advanced Modular Architecture, or AMA, platform.

Powertrain plans are also becoming clearer. The internal-combustion version is said to use a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated i-GT engine, code-named BHE15, producing 120 PS and 150 Nm. It is expected to be paired with a CVT.

A hybrid version is also part of the programme. This HEV variant is reported to use a 1.5-litre Dedicated Hybrid Engine delivering 82 kW and 136 Nm, matched to a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, or DHT.

Proton previously displayed its HEV technology at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show 2026, underlining that the electrified setup is not just a placeholder but part of the company’s broader product development plan.

The Saga Cross (AMA 02) is expected to be offered in four variants, including one HEV trim. However, the exact variant lineup has not been formally confirmed by Proton.

Manufacturing preparations are already understood to be underway. Initial trial units are believed to be assembled at DRB-Hicom’s facility in Pekan, Pahang before full production shifts to Tanjung Malim.

Trial production is reportedly due to start around August 2026, with mass production targeted for late October. If that schedule holds, a formal launch could follow in November or December 2026, positioning the model as a 2027 release.
